What size of UPS is needed to power a DirecTiVo and a multiswitch
for 8 to 12 hours durnig a power outage? (assuming the DirecTiVo
is recording on both tuners during most of the 8 to 12 hours)
Thanks! :)

There isn't one with that much reserve battery power, unless you are willing to spend thousands on a network server type UPS.
You might get 1-2 hours out of a consumer-grade 1200va unit.

You'd probably get up to four hours from a 1200VA unit. If you got one of the APC 1500VA models and the second battery, you might make it. A DTiVo draws about 45W assuming that the multiswitch is powered by the receiver.

If you expect 8-12 hour power outages, you should consider a backup generator. Then you can have power for lights, refrigerator, etc.

I have a 1400VA with two tivos and get about 2hrs. If you really want it to last that long then you are looking at a fairly large size 12v to 120v converter, a maintenance charger and a bank of marine batteries. It can be done easily but probably will cost a couple of hundred dollars. With that being said I would go back to what Jim said. Harbor Freight has a very nice reman diesel generator that could supply your whole house for about $5k....

Think if I had regular 8-12 hour power outages, the least of my worries would be a Tivo unit. Something more important like air conditioning comes to mind in 105F heat.
