TiVo Mystery Files: Case #28

Oddly, we lost closed captioning via the TiVo on one of our TVs.

At first, I thought the problem was in transferring shows because we weren't getting CC with a movie we had transferred between TiVos. But CC was there on the original movie on the other TiVo.

Then, we discovered that CC was missing in live TV mode and wasn't there on the recorded shows we knew had it! It was still there via the TV alone...but the TiVo wouldn't show it. Weirdness!

I presumed--WRONGLY it turns out-- that some TV/VCR or TV/CATV or Input/Video setting had been switched inadvertently somewhere. Tried trouble shooting that by removing extra components, trying all the combos, but it was always the same issue-- no closed captioning via the TiVo.

Well, then I remembered the internet, and somewhere in my rummaging, there, here, everywhere, came across a tip about resetting a TV or resetting the TiVo.

I restarted the TiVo (after waiting 1/2 hour as it was, for the first time in months, recording a show on a Saturday morning!).

And voila! CC back again, including on the transferred movie, previous shows, and live TV through the TiVo!

Case solved!

Fortunately, it's a lot easier than the classic technnical support advice for PCs of "Oh, just reinstall the operating system. That should fix things!"

I always wondered where the emphasis should be placed in such advice:

"That should FIX things!" :) or was the comment: "That'll FIX you!".
