Is there a way to increase the LiveTV recording buffer beyond the 30 minutes it uses as a default?

Maybe.

You can change the buffer size on a hacked Tivo but if your TSN starts with 5 or 6 you will need a hardware mod (new PROM) to be able to start hacking the Tivo.
