View Full Version : New Install / Storms Drop Signal

OK...
Just moved. Old house NEVER lost signal - not during blizzard, storms, etc.
Now one small rain knocked me out for 2 hours in new place. Had installer come back and inspect. He repositioned a little, strength is about 90.
Rained again, lost signal.
DTV is sending someone out to do whatever...but what is my problem? It is aimed over trees, but original installers says it is clear.
LNB bad? Can a cheap powered multiswitch have anything to do with it?
What should I do?

I would check all the connections. It's possible that water is getting in and causing you to lose signal.

What maharg18 said.
A "small rain" caused the signal to go out for 2 hours? Was the signal still out long after the rain ended?
If the answer is "yes", that can't be anything but water getting into something. You've either got water getting into a coax connection or a bad LNB that is letting water get into its housing.

Well...Maybe not a small rain...But a rain that should not have wiped me out. Some winds also, but not a hurricane. No reason to stretch the truth to you guys...It was not a "small rain" and it does not go out for "2 Hours" . . .Sorry.
It was out - but came back shortly after rain stopped.
Only coax outdoors is coming off the dish.
Leaky LNB sounds more likley to me.
Any other ideas to feed to the installer when he comes other than replace LNB?

Still shouldn't be. The worst I've ever had has been about five minutes, and the signal is always back when the rain actually arrives. It is the coming rain which block the signal from the southwest here in New Jersey.
Where do you live?

I agree !!!
After my first install, the same thing happened to me and Directv sent over a different installer and he found a loose connection that was rusted out do to rain. He also had to realign the dish because the first installer had not done it properly.

even a good rain will wipe out my signal and im getting 92-93
i dunno, maybe its cause my dish is on the roof, at the peak.

Morris County...Morristown Area. A state usually helps or I assume Mississippi.

what about your other channels? i pretty much lose em all.

Depends on the storm. The very few scattered storms this summer have not caused any problems even when they passed south of my house. I'll lose the HD channels first and they are the last to come back. (One reason is the cracked LNB but I'm not changing it out until it cools off in the fall.) By the time the channels on 101 are going out, it's a good sized storm. When the locals go out, my weather radio is usually going off with severe storm warnings.
The peak of the roof is probably the best location for your dish. Just make sure it's securely achored and properly aimed. The only solution for all rain fade is a larger dish. I just live with my occaisional outages.

Tree growth is starting to affect a self-install I did about 10 years ago -- think
it's time to move the dish. Any ideas how willing Directv is to do a
'free installation' by moving a dish for a long-time customer??

You can negotiate with them. When I had an issue last year, they sent the guy out for free and gave me $5 off the protection plan per month.

if you tell them it is an issue with trees and line of sight, it should be free
the solution depeneds on the subcontractor
if trees are on your property, they'll probably just tell you to trim em
if they're not on your property they'll move the dish
on to the guy with the picture problems
try a dishcover

Does a dish cover really do anything? Will it have any effect of losing signal from the rain? I have guy coming this am to adjust.

Not a thing except lighten your wallet.
It might help some with snow buildup, as it keeps the snow from building up longer, and when it does it's more uniform in thickness unlike the buildup on the concave dish being thicker on the bottom edges, thus mucking up the signal.
The only thing you can do to counteract rain fade is have the best possible signal and waterproof the connections that are exposed to the rain.
