Used Tivo and Referral points?

Does anyone here know if you can get Referral Points from a used Tivo? I've talked a friend into buying a Tivo - and they got a great deal on a used one. On the Tivo site, it simply says that you must be creating a new account (they are) and keep it open for 30 days.

Does anyone know if that means the Tivo could be purchased from anywhere? Or will it matter that it was previously registered to someone else?

Any help would be great - I'd like some points for my efforts! :D

a new activation on a differetn account will let you enter refferal points.
