General troubleshooting tips here http://www.weaknees.com/repair.php and here http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-powering-up.php
If the drive can be fixed is the question. Running the manufacturer's drive diagnostics from a floppy or CD-ROM (not from XP OS) would possibly give you an indication of the severity of hard disk damage. SpinRite from grc.com performs a deep analysis/data recovery but the program alone is around $100 and comes with no guarantees of success. Assuming you could use Linux dd or dd_rescue to copy the contents of the old drive to a new one, the old image might be corrupted. I guess part of the answer depends on how much time and effort you wish to expend on trying to resuscitate the old drive. That happened to my Gamecube and N64. Luckily for me after a while they both started working. I would wait a little bit. If your hard drive is broken (because that is all a backup will fix) and not the power supply, please post your model number for more help. If it is just the power supply get one on weeknees or 9thtee or ebay.
