My boss has a weird sounding problem. His daughter has a Toshiba series 2 with DVD burner (which has broken down 5 times and has been sent in for warranty 5 times, but that's another story). She finally got fed up with it being out of commission so often and she was missing so many shows, that she bought a dual tuner TiVo. She has hooked both TiVos to her network, and she is able to move shows from the DT model to the Toshiba, and she can then watch the shows off the Toshiba.

But what she can't do is to burn a show on the Toshiba to DVD, if it originally came from the DT model. Something about it not being in the right format or something. This doesn't sound right to me. You can move the show, but not burn it? You'd think once it was on the Toshiba you should feel free to burn the show.

Shows cannot be burned if they were transferred from another TiVo, even if both are DVD burners. That is a known issue. Not sure if it will ever be possible. I think the problem is that the non-DVD burner TiVos do not record in DVD quality so TiVo just assumes that any transferred recording cannot be burned (if someone had 2 DVD burner TiVos they could just burn from the original one without transferring it). If I have the details wrong I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Oh okay.... so it's working as designed.

Itis working as built, likely by design too.

Without intentionally opening the can of worms, I think you'll find the retricted copyability is due to industry restrictions!

In her case, she's wanting to burn shows for personal use off the cable feed, so I wouldn't think toes would be getting stepped on there.
