Hey, im new here. Just purchsed a s2 DT today online for the 155$ it was. Thought it was a steal. The only thing that kept me from purchasing a tivo before was the 20$ monthly fee, but i have a year to see how much i like the service and 155$ can't be beat for this box.

I'm looking forward to getting it, might have to put a larger harddrive in it though, seeing how i may or may not decide to store a lot of junk i record on there.

I do have a question though, I realize it has an ethernet port. Do i absolutely need to use the phone line for the initial hook-up, then i can use ethernet for the rest of the time? That's what i basically read after looking over it and i'm just making sure.

Can't wait to get it in, and i dont have digital cable so this was the box for me, i just hope i use the dual tuners as much as i hope to.

Welcome to the board.

IIRC, I think the S2 DTs are supposed to be shipped with the latest software that should let you use ethernet right out of the box. If not, and you don't have a land line, yo ucan always go to a friend's or neighbor's house to do the initial set-up and software update and then bring it home for Ethernet use. Though I do think it should be all set out of the box.

Enjoy!

You can use the ethernet port for the intial setup. It goes a lot faster than over the phoneline.

Enjoy it, and welcome aboard.

Thanks all.

Really didnt matter if i used ethernet or not, but i figured it would just be a hell of a lot easier that way, and at school i have to pay for outgoing phone calls.

Might have to add a box for family members after they see it. My aunts love to tape their soap operas and i always tell them to get a tivo just so i could get a box and pay 7$ a month, now it looks as if its the other way. Oh well no worries.

While $20/mo is one of the bundled options, keep in mind that that includes service and the box. There are other cheaper by the month bundled options as well as not buying from Tivo.com and paying only $12.95/mo for service only.

can you use a wireless usb adapter for intial setup or only the rj45 port?

I think you can with certain adapters that are known to TiVo or follow the standard specs to fit the standard driver TiVo has.

I will try guided setup with my TiVo wireless adapter when I set it up this weekend

I used the wireless adapter that Tivo makes, and it worked fine for the initial setup. I never had to use a wired or telephone connection.

Welcome to the Tivolution. The others are right, the ethernet is hot and ready to go the minute the Tivo is powered. Also before you start modding it with a larger hard driver, using a PC and TivoToGo may be another way of moving stuff off of the Tivo to stretch hard driver space. Also you may not want to crack open the Tivo until the warrenty has ran out.

Good point - if you want to store shows for archival purposes and occaisional viewing then a PC and TiVoToGo will fill that need very nicely.

If after the first year, you want to stay with tivo (and i can't imagine why you wouldn't!), then you can call customer service. If you agree to another year commitment, they'll convert your plan to the service only option that others have described here so that you only pay $12.95/mo instead of $19.95.

If you want to stay month to month, then you'll have to pay the $19.95.

Welcome.

Plug the DT right into the ethernet, it will do its thing no problem from day one.

Take a look into the Upgrade Forums for info on upgrading your DT, you will not regret it.
