Well after years of using the Time Warner and Cox DVR's ( i have been using those DVR's since they were test marketed ..for me thats was when i was living in upstate newyork) and considering for awhile they were the same type of model and interface that worked fine for me (but over the years i admired the Tivo's ease of use interface and slick options for advanced users alike) .. then after i left Cox (in Las Vegas ) for greener hills of Atlanta,GA i came to what will be know (to me atleast) as my mortal Foe ...Comcast. After i hooked up the Comcast's DVR (its the split model that will output and record HDTV programming as well) i was treated to a slow ...clunky and buggy interface that continued to crash and randomly delete my recordings ...the sched was aweful as well and somtimes they dont even bother to update it ..so once and awhile one program turned out to be a completely different one i even had one completely die with almost a full hard drive of my fav shows (sigh) :( needless to say i really thought i was screwed.
About 2 years ago i started playing around with Windows MCE ..i made my own MCE system (after they released 2004 edition) and bought all the right goodies to make it work and it did for a time ..(it suffered from crashes and all kinds of weird Windows Like issues ) but the video output was pretty and with a dual CPU system 99.9 precent without video dropout or hiccups and i was pretty happy with it for a long time.. then after some new updates microsoft issued it just got worse ..and it came to a point were i had to restart constantly from the MCE crashing due to a software error that made it near impossible to have windows running without a MCE crash every 3-4 hours i even did several reinstalls with same frustrating results.... very frustrating , all my shows were chopped up messes so i gave up on MCE at that point.
About 1 week ago after really having been fed up with Comcast's poor excuse of a DVR ..i remembered "hey its been awhile since i looked into owning a Tivo" so i checked the web site and after about 10 mins i got one of the 80 hour Series 2 DVR for 19.99 a month for one year ..seemed like a good deal to me. I just got it today and have been playing with all the options for hours and i cant say how impressed i am ..its just awesome. I LOVE being able to transfer shows to my PC and watch them on it and that was a make or break feature for me. I came with space ready on my main PC ( i got 2 750 gig monsters for all my Tivo's shows to transfer to and i am getting a deal from a buddy for 4 500 gig drives to finish out my monster storage for a grand total of about 3.5 terabyes of storage) ..that alone makes Tivo much better than any other DVR i have tested.
Anyway just wanted to share my Tivo Conversion with all you folks. :D
