As I indicated in another thread, I purchased a used R10 and put a new drive in it for a spare unit. I noticed that this R10 had components with 2004 dates. I assume the R10 was also built in 2004. When I compare it physically with my current R10, the only difference that sticks out is that the center button on the front panel is silver colored on the newer one, and white on the one I bought used. The remotes are identical.

Have there been any significant hardware changes made to the R10 since it was released? Anything in particular to look for in a 2 year old unit besides the drive? Power supply problems, etc.

Sometimes those older R10 units can cause compulsive anxiety about minutia. ;)

I'm kidding, but there was only one model of Gen04 (sometimes referred to as Series 2.5) DTivo, the R10. It's likely that the R10's parts evolved during its production life (parts are routinely sourced from different manufacturers and those manufacturers change over time), and that's what you're seeing.

Another, more visble, change (though not the R10) is the chassis design for the Series 2 DTivo units (and probably the standalones for that matter). The exhaust grill for the fan was flat on the earlier models, but curved (to prevent the device from being smothered against a back panel or wall) on the later models.

Furthermore, I haven't heard of any runs of units with bad components, crummy caps , or anything like that. The board layout is a fairly conservative design and should age well (as evidenced by all the S1 units still chugging).
