So I've got this "old" tivo series 2 device that I was thinking about playing with. I know I can download the tivo's mod's to linux. I guess the main question, what if I want to install linux on the device using their mod's from scatch, for learning purposes? Is this even possible? is the device even funtional? Are there drivers available for the video? etc?

I realize this will void the warentee, and I probably won't be able to recover without taking an image of the HD first? But what if I didn't care?

Probably a more appropriate question for the Tivo Underground Forum, but I'm not aware of anyone that has successfully converted their Tivo into a general Linux computer.

Yes, you can do this. IIRC, you just need to boot the tivo with handcraft set to true, and don't start myworld. I think you'll find yourself severly disappointed as the hardware is designed for the functions only tivo uses, and it's pretty poor at doing other things.

I can't recall the specifics, but with a PPC/MIPS CPU 133MHz range and 32/64MB of RAM assuming a S2 SA/Dtivo respectively, you're gonna be hard pressed to do much more than make it a fileserver. Most folks opt to turn it into an MRV/M&P station.
