View Full Version : About to sack DirecTV
Once again
there is no possible explination why my DirecTv Tivo boxes seem to be recording channels I don't receive.
Recording a blank screen on ABCW, TBS National, Telemundo, Univision or CanalSur is not acceptable.
On DirecTVs advice I have:
Cleared and deleted everything (OK, I was young and stupid)
Confirmed that the channels had not been enabled by a DirecTV update
Confirmed that the channels were unchecked in channels I receive
Confirmed that I have no season passes or other selections to indicate I get those channels
DirecTVs advice is to turn off suggestions. My response as always has been a simple one. How much will DirecTV be rebating or reducing my bill by? Suggestions are an important part of the TiVo experience and just because DirecTV has caised a proboem in the software I should not be penalized. My Phillips HDR110 never records channels I don't receive. My HR10-250 doesen't either. But every DSR6000, DSR7000, DSR704 and DSR708 has the same issue?
Telling me that it was my dish/multiswitch/cabling was yet another dodge by DirecTV. I took a box to a friends house and it still behaves the same.
Series 3 can't come soon enough for me...

It's just suggestions... mark with a single thumbs down and then move on down the list. It will 'learn' your programs and start recording what you like.

Wow
Do you think you could possibly cry any more about this?
Also, while you're at it, please use a spell checker next time.
Seriously, I fail to see how this is DTV's fault. They didn't design the software.
As far as them making an excuse with your mutiswitch, it's just some CSR just guessing anything to try and placate you.
You probably called in, being an jerk about a minor problem that they have no power to fix, and probably don't understand what you're talking about anyways. Out of sheer flustration of having to listen to your retarded crying and calls for compensation probably got tired of listening to you and made something up.
Thanks

Yes I agree. This is pretty sad how much some people can complain. It's almost like people who complain their ice cubes aren't big enough in their drink when they go out to eat. TIVO suggestions are basically stupid. It never records anything that I'm interested in. That and the TIVO doesn't know what channels you subscribe to. It sees something in the program guide and it records it, plain and simple. Just turn them off!! I would hate to be a DTV CSR and have to listen to people bitch about crap like that.

Perhaps this response to the OP is the reason DTV customer service is going down the tubes - the problems people have are just seen as retarded whining.
I can see where you, allegedly being a DTV employee, might feel the need to defend the company you work for, but this tirade was worse than the OPs.
There was once a time DTV Customer support was well above average, but those days are long gone; I guess I now know why.
Just my 2 cents.

i know you said you unchecked the channels you do not receive... but after doing so you have to set that list that you edited as your default list. while watching tv hit guide, then hit info. scroll down and choose the channels list that you edited. you have to keep this set as default otherwise it will record from all channels.

I might be wrong, but I don't think this is true. It should only record from the Channels I Receive list, regardless of whether you use this as your guide list.

Correct... the setting in the guide... is just to enable it as the filter for the guide.
Simply put....
If you have it UNMARKED in your Channels You Recieve list....
And you don't setup an INDEPENDENT recording or had one already scheduled for that channel (aka... not a Season Pass or Wishlist auto record)
Then the Suggestions should not record on them.
If they are... then something is wrong.. with your particular unit, and will either need a clear and delete... or a replacement.
As basically this is how the software has worked for 5+ years now.

Really?
DirecTV approves the TiVo software on all boxes since around 2001, but if there is a problem generated by the box it is definately TiVos fault? Another DirecTV dodge of the truth?
Glad to know DirecTV is training CSRs so well, guess I should call 'Uncle Bill' and congratulate him. Placing a "thumbs down" on a program shown on ABCW carries over to the local broadcast program since the ID is the same. The only partiallly sane answer yhat I have ever received from DirecTV is that after a year or so the number of suggestions available becomes small and TiVo software starts seeking outside the "channels I receive" unlike other TiVo products that work properly.
I just want an answer. I have shipped off photos of the problem in action but DirecTV still has no answer. Recording channels I don't receive is an ongoing problem. Maybe I need to get an EXPERT over to see the issue in action? Somebody from DirecTV willing to come over and sleep on my couch to prove me wrong...

Recording the blank screen from channels I don't receive has happened to me as well. I never cared that much to do anything about it. However, I will go verify that the correct channels are flagged under "Channels I Receive".
Seriously, this isn't THAT big of an issue. And the reduction of quality in call centers in almost every company is sign that people would rather pay less for consumer goods/services up front. Documentation, call centers, and other customer support functions are expensive for companies. It's just the free market at work....not really an emotional issue.

Anoither thing to note is that even with the automatic recording of suggestions turned off the unit will still suggest shows you may like. You just have to manually go to the Suggestions menu and select the ones you may want to record.

Don't worry, it's not the size of the ice cubes...
And
if another brand of recorder had a similar issue there would be no end to the TiVondoesen't have that problem posts here. Attempting to hide a problem and shout down someone with a legitimate issue just because it is TiVo is shameful...

I called DIRECTV yesterday to complain that I hadn't seen any new episodes of SPONGEBOB being shown lately.
I sent them some pictures to.

OK now that was funny.
Now to JJ, your last post makes little if any sense. You're not being shot down due to your problem. You're being shot down due to your "idea" of what a problem is.
You've been given a very simplistic solution for stopping your problem ( turn off tivo suggestions). However, you consider it horrible customer service because DTV reps can't give you a reason why it's happening and you want some type of compensation for not using a portion of your service (which I'm sure about 90% of tivo users don't even use). That would be like me asking for compensation for hrs I didn't use on my cell phone.
I can think of worse problems.. I dunno like having hurricane Katrina take down my house... now that would be a problem to be upset about.

If they are not checked off in "Channels I Receive" there must be some kind of malfunction.
But, I would check again just to make sure. It just seems like the logical explanation for what's happening.
Were they unchecked when you looked, or did you uncheck them then? It might take some time for the recordings to stop if you had to uncheck them.

That may be a Quixotic quest. DirecTV insists on adding back channels.
The solution I use is to set up favorites for all the channels I watch. TiVo never messes with favorites (unless you encounter the bug where channels are deleted, which deletes favorites as a side effect).
It's not perfect but it's 95% of the way to perfection.

i just dont get why they do it though. They should know I dont get the HD pak nor the HD locals so why add back 72-90s ? Seems pretty stupid to me.
Still, i'd rather delete "them" instead of having to redo all the favorites if that's what you are telling me happens occasionally. No way I want to go through that again. I get tons of locals OTA that needed to be deleted and they've never been added back.
