I have a defective Western Digital 80GB Caviar drive out of an R10. The manufacturing date on the drive is 23 Dec 2004. The standard warranty on a WD Caviar drive is 3 years. However, there is a stipulation in the warranty policy that states, "If your Product was purchased as a component integrated within a system by a system manufacturer, no limited warranty is provided by WD. Please contact the place of purchase or the system manufacturer directly for warranty service."
Of course, my drive shows that there is no warranty, apparently because it was installed in a TiVo by the manufacturer. Is there another way to get a replacement drive without sending the R10 back to DirecTV? I'm not willing to do that, so I may be just out of luck for a new drive.

As cheap as replacement drives are, why not just buy a $50 160gb drive and image it with the Tivo software?

I just thought if I could get a replacement, I would keep it for a spare for one of my computers. It only costs $5 postage for a replacement drive (if it could be done.) Even with the prices as low as they are today, you can't buy a WD Caviar 80GB for $5.

Well, if your purpose is just to build stock, we likely can't help. You bought an R10 with a warranty, not a WD Caviar.
Honestly, if you want a drive on the shelf so bad, just get off your wallet.

The warranty period for a WD drive (or any other make) varies depending on how it was purchased and how it is used. A retail WD drive only comes with a 1-year warranty (upgradeable to 3 years for $14.95). An OEM drive comes with a 3-year warranty. An OEM drive installed by the manufacturer of a computer or other device assumes the warranty for the drive and provides whatever warranty they see fit.
A DTivo comes with a 90-day replacement warranty (parts & labor) or a 1-year warranty (parts only). The drive in a Tivo is not warrantied separately from the entire unit. The warranty on your R10 has expired so your only chance at getting a replacement drive is if you buy one yourself.
