I bought a used R10 to rat-hole away for the day my other R10 may bite the dust. According to the fellow I bought it from, the hard drive is bad. Doesn't matter as I have a drive removed from a new R10 when I put in a larger drive. I will use that one.

My question is, can I do a reasonable amount of testing without activating the unit? Should I be able to tell by looking at the antenna strength, doing a system test, etc. that the used R10 is probably OK even though I can't see any programming? Is there a channel that I can see without activation?

Sure. Channel 100 and 200 and 201 for example. You need a card, but no activation.

As a follow-up, I installed the new drive, and the R10 fired right up. I did a forced phone call, and everything seems to be working just fine. I have channel 200 running right now. It's really nice when things work like they should.
