After a year of struggling with Vonage, 2 TiVOs, and my alarm, I got rid of my Linksys PAP2 Phone Adaptor and replaced it with a D-Link VTA-VR Phone Adaptor and a D-Link DI-102 Broadband Accelerator and all my problems went away. Everything is working perfectly now ! Read on for details.

Equipment:
DirecTV HD TiVo (HR10-250)
DirecTV TiVo (Samsumg)
ADT Alarm System (Ademco box, 12 years old)

Old Setup
------------

I got Vonage a little over a year ago. I got a LinkSys PAP2 Phone Adaptor that lasted about a month before dying. It was replaced by another one that was DOA, and then replaced with a third one. The third one died last week. Three Linksys devices going bad in a year, and my other experiences with LinkSys, has me a strong believer that LinkSys is total crap and I will never buy another product.

Vonage phone service has been fair. Many times I hear echo and my wife doesn’t really considerate it that useable. Sometimes it’s good sometimes it’s not. My alarm seemed to work pretty reliably and I guess that it’s because it’s 12 years old and has a slow modem.

My TiVos have been a problem. I spent a lot of time reading discussion board and trying things and finally settled on settings such as:

Phone Number: 212-277-3895
Dialing Prefix: 12122773895
Call Waiting Prefix: *70,,#019,,

My Direct TV HD TiVo (HR-250) would make about one successful call in about 7 tries. My Direct TV TiVo (Samsung) would make one successful call in about 15-20 tries. The TiVos also try to call a DirecTV 800 number, but with the dialing prefix it would try to call the 212 number instead. This would mean about 20 calls per day trying to get to the DirecTV 800 number that never succeeded. Since I have the 500 minute Vonage plan I had to keep my TiVos unplugged until I got nagged enough to call. I also could not order Pay Per View via the remote even if I plugged the phone line in.

In summary, I have fair phone service, my TiVO could not reliably call in even using the 212 phone number, I could not order Pay Per View, and I had to keep the phone line unplugged from the TiVos all the time.

New Setup
------------

With the 3rd LinkSys PAP2 dying and since LinkSys is crap, I set out to find another phone adaptor. I found the D-Link VTA-VR Phone Adaptor and got it at Comp USA for $49. In my research I found a device called a Hawkings HBB1 Broadband Booster that is supposed to help VoIP performance. I looked into it and it sounded interesting. I found that there is also the new D-Link DI-102 Broadband Accelerator that does the same thing. I thought about getting one of these and leaned toward the D-Link DI-102 Broadband Accelerator because I was getting the D-Link VTA-VR Phone Adaptor but they cost like $50-$80 and got mostly good but mixed reviews. When I went to CompUSA to get the
D-Link VTA-VR Phone Adaptor several days ago I saw that they have the D-Link DI-102 Broadband Accelerator on a Manager’s Special for $39. I bought them both.

I hooked up D-Link devices and started testing. The phone now sounds great. I have not heard any echo, static, etc, so far. My wife said the phone is not great for calling her mother long distance.

The alarm works fine and I noticed that the time it took to communicate with the ADT central office was about ¼ as long. ADT called me back much quicker.

Now for the TiVo. Both TiVos were able to make a successful call first time every time. I had no failures on either TiVo for about 5 calls each. They worked first time and they were fast !

I then went one step farther and tried to see if I could dial a load number with my TiVos. I took out the dialing prefix and call waiting and tried a local number. That worked too ! So, my current TiVo settings are:

Phone Number: 443-583-XXXX
Dialing Prefix: (none)
Call Waiting Prefix: (none)

So that means my Vonage line is working just like a normal phone line. The phone sounds great. My alarm works great. I have both TiVos connected all the time and they call in perfectly every time and I can use the local number with no extra dialing options. I can keep both TiVo connected all the time without having it use up my 500 minutes by trying to call DirecTV 20 times a day. And, I can once again order Pay Par View via the remote control which I have not been able to do for a year.

Right now I’m 100 times happier with Vonage. I’m not sure if the improvement came from the D-Link VTA-VR Phone Adaptor replacing the crappy LinkSys PAP2, the addition of the D-Link DI-102 Broadband Accelerator, or both.

A level 3 Vonage tech unofficially told me the PAP2 sucks. The Motorola and Dlink are much better. My DTivo dials in fine with a NY area code on the Moto.

I wanted to get Vonage, but a rep told me I could only attach 5 phones to the adapter. Is that true?? I have one line in my house but probably 10-12 phones. Can I not use Vonage??

That's because of the Ringer Equivalence Number I think. I believe that it is true.

I was thinking of geting Vonage to save money on my phone service. I really only have the land line for my TiVo's. I had thought that Vonage did not work with the TiVo's. I am going to get Vonage now.

man... I'm glad this works for you but it's just more money for me to drop into the never ending pit of Tivo/Vonage/DTV 1000 dollar boxes that are worthless blah blah...

Now that I'm done crying, I think I'll wait for a 100% 6.3 upgrade before I go this far, other wise ill just deal with the tivo not making call messages...

Thanks for the info!

Well I got tired of trying every special code and waving garlic and saying incantations over the PAP2 from LinkSys and went and got the DLink adapter....... and it worked first time. No special codes, no problems. Will have to watch it over the next week and see how it goes...... but at least now if they ever do release 6.3 it looks like my box will make the phone call that will let the new update activate. I can't even begin to think about the hours that I spent on the phone with Vonage and D* trying to get this to work. Why Vonage and D* don't just tell everyone with a PAP2 to ditch it and get something that works is beyond me.

But how can they only make routers that allow 5 phones to work in a house. I have 3 tivos and like 9 phones as well as an alarm. I can't be the only person who wants to make a break from Verizon but can't because of some many phones????

Whats the solution??

Kind of a thread hijack, however,
Has anybody used the D-Link DI-102 Broadband Accelerator with TWC digital phone with success?
I tried and tried but eventually went back to Bellsouth land line in order to connect D* tivos. I am also in the boat of have about 15 phones. Any feedback from the forum members would be appreciated.
Thanks

Was pretty excited to hear of your success so I went to CompUSA and purchased both the D-Link VTA-VR and the DI-102. I have Verizon FIOS internet service consistantly giving me 30mbs/4mbs data rates. But even with all this I surprisingly could not get the results you did. In fact I had no improvement at all with making a successful call.

Buy a multi handset wireless phone system: I have a uniden 5.8Ghz two line phone on vonage with 5 handsets (expandable to 10) and uses only 1 ringer equivalency -- leaving 4 hardwired connections to use with your tivo and alarm.

I have a moto adapter and i am interested in the accellerator. My security company is using old equipment and they mandate i have a POTS line. I don't want to pay for a POTS line, so the accelerator is intriguing.

My issue is the phone doesn't disconnect properly. I have this same issue with the TiVo until i used the NYC number. Would the accelerator work with the moto adapter and a belkin router?

OK...I'm stupid...what does this all mean. If I get a Uniden phone system (how much and where?) the five phones I use through that 'system' would count as one of the five lines? I guess I'd have to buy two of those, but it seems odd that I'd have to replace ALL the phones in my house. Would these be 'wired' handsets, or are they the unwired kind that just need to plug into an electrical outlet? If that's the case, how would I 'wire' in my Tivo's (x3) as well as my alarm?

I'd think that Vonage or OptVoice would subsize these if people would need to buy them to use the service...no?

Thanks for your help!

I used this link to help me set up my house a few years ago. It worked really well. Basically once you have the vonage service disconnect your baby bell line from your house and plug the adapter into the wall. Older homes can be a bit trickier.

I just ordered the accelerator. I have the same symptoms and set up as Onazuka so I am having my fingers crossed!

Excellent information, thanks for sharing. I'll have to go pick up the DLink adapter myself.

I just got a Motorola replacement for my Linksys today. I kept having dropped connections when my internet connection was working fine. I hope this helps. My wife is getting upset...

Based on the OP's experience, I went to Compusa yesterady and got the Vonage D-Link adapter to replace my Linksys PAP2, and the D-Link VOIP Accelerator. When I replaced my Motorola box with the Linksys over a yeear ago, I had to call Customer Service to do the swap. I was pleased to discover that by clicking through the "Retail Activation" link, Vonage has set up a way for us to move our existing service to a new adapter by supplying the MAC address, then configuring the new box.

Start to finish, everything was swapped out/in and configured and I was back up in less than 10 minutes. My Vonage service sounds great now, and the normal Internet activity has improved quite a bit. I didn't even power-cycle my Motorola cable modem (Comcast) and the regular download speeds on the usual test sites doubled.

I'm a happy camper. Thanks for the tips on the D-Link stuff! :D

Anyone try the D-link adapter with optimum? What are your results?

My solution was

Vonage: using old Motorola adapter (it still works, so no need to change)

Hacked TiVos: no need to dial out

NextAlarm: using their ABN adapter, it uses my broadband connection, and is much cheaper than ADT, and I'm using my original ADT equipment. My wife accidentally set off the fire alarm tonight, and I immediately received an e-mail, a text message on my cell phone, and a phone call from them about the event (within a minute).
