Hello all, I am new to this so bear with me. I am trying to upgrade my 40 hour series 2 TCD540040 with a Western Digital EIDE 160 GB drive. Using the Weaknees instructions with the options set as:

Do you want to make a backup: Yes
Do you have a FAT partition on your C drive: No
Are you using Windows XP or Windows 2000: Yes
Save or disregard recordings: Save
Are you moving this software from one TiVo to another: No

So, what ive done is created a FAT32 drive by using a windows 98 boot disk and used the fdisk command and said yes to enable large partitions. Restarted and typed format. Now I have a FAT32 Partition.

Next I connected the drives with the old 40 gb drive as master and the new 160 gb (FAT32) drive as slave to my computer and ran the MFStools. I get hdc as the 40 gb drive and the 160 gb drive as hdd. The sizes show as 41104 and 160010 or something really close (off the top of my head).

So now I typed "mount /dev/hdd1 /mnt"
and i get a response that says that the drive is read only

and try to type "mfsbackup -f 9999 -1so /mnt/backup.bak /dev/hdc"
and it says that the mounted drive is read only and nothing happens.

Can anyone shed some light on this one? Thanks -MG

You are trying to mount the new TiVo drive (hdd) instead of the drive with the FAT32. The FAT32 needs to be the normal C: drive on the computer which will hold the backup image.

Okay, i am trying to put the backup on the new tivo drive then transfer it to the SATA XP NTFS drive. The new tivo drive is my FAT32 drive. Or am I still more confused than ever? Does it matter where the FAT32 drive is, can it be the Secondary Slave for instance? -MG

It doesn't matter, as long as you can mount it.

So i guess my questions are:

1) How do I tell if my drive is FAT32?

2) How do I tell if my drive is NOT read-only?

3) Is it reading the whole size (160) and not 137?

Thanks for all your help so far! -MG
