So I've been a standard TIVO user for sometime now and got really spoiled with it. My stand alone unit died and thought that I would try the cable companies DVR just for giggles and HATE it and want my TIVO back.

I've been toying with the idea of going with directv so I can get the NFL thing for my hubby. After reading through a gazillion threads though I'm confused about the directv and tivo thing. I have an HD tv so was thinking of getting the HR10-250. That runs with a TIVO interface right? Is it the same as a SA with the same options - i.e. seasons pass, the undelete function etc.? And what about talks for terminating their relationship with TIVO? The price tag is pretty hefty and I would hate to pay it and have it become obsolete? And whats the deal with hd local channels? Can I get those too?

Are there any other options out there that are feasible. I want to be able to record 2 shows at once, I want to get hd and I want to be able to flip channels without the serious drag that I get with my stupid cable box!

Thanks for any help! :)

I have an HD tv so was thinking of getting the HR10-250. That runs with a TIVO interface right? Correct.

Is it the same as a SA with the same options - i.e. seasons pass, the undelete function etc.? The important features are there like Season Passes and Wish Lists. Undelete? No. Networking? No. Tivo2Go? No.

And what about talks for terminating their relationship with TIVO? No new Tivos but D* is still supporting them.

price tag is pretty hefty and I would hate to pay it and have it become obsolete? What about those of us that paid $1,000+ to be the first to have one? They aren't going to be obsolete for a long time. They won't be able to record the new MPEG4 channels but that doesn't bother many people.

And whats the deal with hd local channels? Can I get those too? Yes you can if they are being broadcast in your area and you have the correct antenna installed. HD Locals are in MPEG4 format. See above for details.

Are there any other options out there that are feasible. I want to be able to record 2 shows at once, I want to get hd and I want to be able to flip channels without the serious drag that I get with my stupid cable box! Either the HR10-250 or wait on the Series 3 and go with cable. There are many more details if you go to the HD Tivo section where we discuss the HR10-250 and the Series 3.

The HR10-250 cannot receive the new HD Locals from DirecTV unless you live in New York or Los Angeles,
NY and LA are still MPEG2, but the rest of the country is MPEG4, or soon will be.
The HR10-250 does not have an MPEG4 decoder, and never will.

The HR10-250 can get HD Locals from an antenna, and record them just fine.
To find out if you can receive OTA (Over The Air) HD channels, check antennaweb.org.

Is it the same as a SA with the same options - i.e. seasons pass, the undelete function etc.?
There are hacks that you can install that will add most of the same functions available on the SA models except for HMO and MRV. You can add networking capability and install TivoWebPlus for the undelete function.
