Having lost /var/hack and various utilities recently to Tivo's occasional housekeeping I decided to reinstall everything today, finishing up with a TivoWebPlus startup editor module session to get irblast and endpad starting automatically (just as before). Now Tivo locks at ...just a few seconds more.. repeatedly.

I pulled the hard drive, attached it to a PC, and booted with Silicon Dust's NIC_Install CD as recommended hereabouts. I can mount '/dev/hdc4 /mnt' fine and find /mnt/etc/rc.d which contains rc.sysinit, rc.sysinit.author and rc.sysinit.author.original. I can cd to /mnt/var but it looks like /hack has gone again (it's not shown with a 'dir' from /mnt/var and I can't cd to it).

In any event I'm wondering if there's anything I can do from this position to restore Tivo to normal operation again. It would be too much of a coincidence for the cause of the problem not to be something I did wrong in editing some sysinit file or other.

Thanks in anticipation.

GeoffT.

Sounds very strange. Normally /var only disppears if it gets very full if I remember correctly.

You could try renaming rc.sysint.author as that should only have commands you've added.

Failing that try searching on here for "backgrounding" commands.
