Hello everyone. Longtime reader first time poster.

I have a Directivo Series 1 (Hughes GXCEBOT) that came with a 40gb hard drive. I bought a 200gb drive and using the resources of this wonderful site upgraded it and installed into the tivo.

Now for my problem. The large drive image only seems to last for 3-6 months before the tivo gets into a reboot and hangs at the "welcome powering up" screen. I usually then put the backup image onto the 200gb and reinstall, and in the process lose all my recordings. I'm getting tired of loosing all of the recordings! Shouldn't the large drive last longer? Are the tivo files that susceptable to being corrupted? How long does the average upgraded drive last?

I have read that there is a log file created by the tivo. Does reading that log file tell you where /which part of the boot sequence is hanging? Can that corrupt file then be replaced?

Thanks for the great site and information!

2 Thoughts
1 If you are using the full 200G do you have the LBA48 version of TiVo software?
2 Is the swap partition at least 100M.

The log files are found in the /var partition I think it is partition 9.

HomeUser thanks for the reply.
1. yes, I am using the LBA48 version
2. I will make sure that the swap is at least 100mb

Does the log file tell the boot order and any problems?

Just to be sure, you replaced/modified the TiVo kernel for LBA48 support. I don't think the Hughes GXCEBOT has a LBA48 aware kernel by default.

Yes the log files contain the boot events and more, there is a lot of information in there.

Are you using a UPS? My 160 GB drive has been in my Series 2 for nearly 13 months, on a UPS.

The 80 GB drives I bought over 2 years ago are working well to, one which was extensively used in a TiVo, the other in a PC that is on most of the day.
