Hi there
Is it possible to tell the tivo to update the tv listings using a telephone line, it is currently set to use the network card, but i can't get that to work at the moment.
Is it possible to change the setting using the tivo?
Thanks
Mike

Sorry, but as far as I know, no.

Ouch, really?
Well I can't seem to connect to the tivo over the network, is there any other way to either update the listings or change the system so that it can do it using the phone line?
Another fly in the ointment is that I can't seem to undo the back of the tivo, it has some funny screws - is there are a special screw driver i need to get? If there anything more readily available that may help?
Thanks

You could pull drive and follow these (http://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2) instructions to either change the IP or change the connection type to/from phone or network.
For the screws, you will need a Torx screwdrive. Not sure if it's size 10 or 15 but it's one of the two :)

Thanks Carl
I have just ordered a Torx 10 screwdriver from pacelink for £10 (incl postage and VAT!). Hopefully I'll get it in the next couple of days.
Rather than pull the hard disk, can I use a crossover network cable and connect it to my laptop? Can I then telnet to it using some guessed ip addresses ... then if I can't work it out, take out the hard disk?
I think there are 2 hard disks - how will i know which one to take out?
Thanks again

You're welcome!

Just checked mine and it is indeed a size 10.

That should work. Please note that my advice comes with no guarantees; expressed nor implied ;):D
There's a little program mentioned here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?p=4237685&&#post4237685) that you might like to try.

Ahh..erm... not certain. I'm sure someone else will be along any minute who able to advise you on that :)

£10 for a Torx driver................yikes..............£1 would be nearer the mark!
If you can cancel your order I'll sell you a set for a fiver...............lol
Sorry to disagree with the experts but I have been playing with a spare TiVo and 3 different HD's over the last few days each of which is configured for network updates via a Turbonet card and all I had to do to use the phone instead was remove the ,#401 prefix in the phone setup screen.

Hi
I downloaded the 'angry IP Scanner' and scanned from 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.3.255, but it only found my desktop and my laptop. No Tivo.
What about my subnet mask? It's currently set to 255.255.255.0 - can (or should) I scan various different permutations of these too?

I don't seem to have any prefix in the phone setup screen??

I'd be surprised if the subnet were anything else but you should still be able to ping it which is essentially what Angry IP Scanner is doing.
Has the network connection ever worked ?
If you've bought it from someone can you contact them to find out what it's IP is?
I once had one which was 192.168.123.200, imagine how long it took to scan forthat ?
Maybe set it going overnight but tell it in options to only display live addresses.
Taking the drive out may be the only way in the end unfortunately.

Try setting it to ,#401 restarting then removing it and restarting again.

Just thought it's also possible that the port has been changed from the standard 80 to something else, maybe 81 ?

Hi

What about my subnet mask? It's currently set to 255.255.255.0 - can (or should) I scan various different permutations of these too?Don't take this as gospel but on Unix a nice trick is to ping the broadcast address of a network to find devices on that subnet. So in your case, connect your laptop to your tivo via a crossover cable. Change your laptop ip to 192.168.1.65, choose something like 65 so it won't clash with whatever the Tivo is, and in a command prompt run ping -t 192.168.1.255. If you see a reply job done, if not change your laptop ip to 192.168.2.65 and run again.
This is making a few assumptions, class c network address on the Tivo, it is set to the non-routable 192 range rather than 10. I would be surprised if it wasn't a 192 class c though. Let us know how you get on.

Hi Craig
Thanks for that. I'll try it when I get home. Stupid question - my wife was out and 'did me a favour' by picking up a crossover network cable, but is there a specific one I need to buy? I could have sworn it was a blue one I wanted, but she brought home a grey male/male Rj45 crossover network cable - will that work?
Thanks

You can't rely on colour!
Your Male 2 Male Xover is fine.

ok, she's open and i have connected my cachecard to my laptop with the crossover, but the laptop's not seeing it?!?
I have pinged it, telnetted to it ... nothing!
Am I missing anything?

Bang! Got it working ... changed the laptop subnet mask from 255.255.0.0 to 255.255.255.0 and turned DHCP off and the telnet came to life.
Downside is that I can't connect connect my laptop to my wireless network now :-(
I went to the router homepage and the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 too ... and I have just disabled the DHCP server, but no joy ... my laptop wireless network no longer works?!?

Congratulations!
Now you're in you can change the subnet/ip on the Tivo.
Telnet in then:
CD /sbin
nic_config_tivo
you should then get the network config where you can change the IP/subnet/gateway to your requirements.

What should I change/set the IP/subnet/gateway settings on the Tivo to?

To match your router.
IP - something in the routers range, typically 192.168.1.x
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Gateway - your routers IP, probably typically 192.168.1.1
I don't know why your wireless isn't working. The ethernet adapter and WiFi are seperate devices and changing the subnet on one should not affect the other.

Err... unless I am missing something, you can change the daily call option using nic_config_tivo on the tivo.
Certainly I have a version of it that runs perfectly on my tivo and allows me to change the settings (ip, netmask, daily call etc)
[ EDIT: Seems I am missing something namely that mikey999 couldn't telnet in to his tivo in the first place, I'll go back to sleep now ...]
