I might purchase a HUMAX DRT400 or DRT800 unit. I was wondering does it record the commercials onto the DVD? If so, is there any way to remove the commercials so they don't appear on the DVD?

The Humax records the entire program, commercials and all. There is no way to edit the program content at all.

The plus of the DRT400/800 is the speed, 20 minutes to save a full DVD, (4hrs at Medium). You also have the option to save to DVD-RW and edit elsewhere or use TivoToGo and transfer to a PC.
One further benefit of the DRT400/800 over a Series 2 when using TTG is that the recording is already in DVD compatible format.

You can send it to your PC and then edit the commercials manually using some kind of video editing software. After that you can burn it to DVD and not have the commercials.
