My Tivo is connected my surround sound system, which I usually do not turn off. Sometimes the sound turns on from the Tivo even when the Tivo is turned off.
So, the state of the system is:
TV is turned off
Tivo is turned off (no lights on at all -- not even the red "recording" light)
AV Receiver is turned on
And, sound is playing via the AV receiver.
Any reason why this is happening? Or, more importantly, how to enure the sound is disabled when Tivo is turned off?
Thanks, in advance,
-- Mark
P.S. The reason the AV receiver is turned on is because it cannot be turned off via remote. It's old.

Are you sure your Tivo is off, or did you just turn off the lights in the settings area? The reason I'm asking is I don't see why your Tivo would be off in the first place. It's kind of an "always on" kind of machine.
If for some reason your Tivo is really off, is there a VCR or DVD player with channel options connected to the system? If that is turned on, it could play sound even without the tv and Tivo.
My number one guess is that your Tivo really isn't off, and that is the cause. Are you personally shutting down the Tivo (again why)? If the Tivo is on, then you'll have to get used to turning off the AV receiver. I have the same issue where I'll turn my tv off from watching a dvd, and when the Tivo timesout from being on the Tivo Central page (or Now Playing List), I get a surprise burst of noise from my AV.

You can put the TiVo in Standby using the menus, that will shut off the sound. Otherwise, as Brian says, you'll have to turn off your receiver. TiVo is always on when it is plugged in.

TiVo is off? that would be a problem unless it only records when you are watching tv.
I had a similar problem with my av unit until I picked up a harmony 628 universal from Amazon for $35 recently.
Now I can shut everything off with the click of the off button.
Otherwise I had TiVo out put once to the AV Receivier and also directly to the TV and when the kids watch we would bypass the receiver, now we don't have to.
