We bought a 40 gig HD in December and we have put maybe 20 hours on it and now there is a message that states that the hd is FULL!! What's the deal?

At which of the four quality settings are you recording? If you are using best then this would be about right. 40GB is considered tiny by most TiVo enthusiasts.

A 40GB drive will only hold about 20 hours of video recorded at high quality and you must have everything set to 'keep until I delete' in which case your tivo can't record anything until yuou delete something and create a little more room. If you really need to have that many recordings saved at a time, you should seriously look into upgrading to a larger hard drive so that this doesn't become a problem again.
