Dumb question I quess but I would like to know if you can record on the tivo box if you do not have the service. I'm talking about just using it as a dvr recorder.

Most old SA Series 1 TiVos will allow it. Some Series 2 TiVos come with TiVo Basic which allows it. However, most newer TiVos will not allow you to do much without a subscription.

Thanks for the reply. I have the series 2 , tivo 80 receiver. I have had it since feb. of 2006. I like most of the features on the tivo except the picture quality while watching live tv. I have tried every hook up possible and even took the frist unit back and got the 80. It's not much better. It is also so very slow changing channells . I will finish my year of service with tivo then I'l be looking at other options. Thanks,
