I just purchased an older model Tivo. It's a SVR 2000. It was never set up. The guy I bought it from had purchased it from a going out of business sale several years ago and he just put it away in his attic until now.
When I try to set it up, it will go through the procedure until it gets to the last part where it asks you to pick a local dialing number. After you pick the local number and push ok, the Tivo goes momentarily to another screen that is blank, then shuts off.
I've tried this several times and the only way I can get it to go completely through the setup is use the antannae setting. And of course, that is no good because I only get 8 or 9 channels.
What can I do to be able to complete the setup in the cable or satellite setting?

If it were mine I would reimage the hard drive and see if that helps the situation. For some reason TiVoss that sit around for a long time not powered can exhibit unusual behavior and may even not boot up at all. Frequently a fresh image cures the problem. You need to do some reading in the stickies at the top of the upgrade forum.

I recall that there was a reboot issue on trying to run Guided Setup on a box running an old version of the TiVo software when the box isn't subscribed.

If that's the case, a call to customer support would grant a temporary subscription that would last long enough to get through guided setup.

This issue was resolved with a software update -- so once the box gets the update, it won't have the problem any more.

Just wanted to say thanks to Bedelman and Funtoupgrade for their help. I got the Tivo up and running great. I had to update the software version from 1.3 to 3.0. Once it did that, it went through the guided setup smoothly. So thanks for helping a newbie!!!
