View Full Version : black screen....only when tv is off

ok....my friends tivo isnt working so she asked me to help her fix it...it records fine when the T.V Is on but if you turn the tv off and try to record something....you go back and turn the tv on an hour later to try and watch the show and it just shows up as a black screen....the green and red lights are both on when thrying to record with tv off....it just doesnt do it...like i said it works fine with the tv on...(but she doesnt wanna keep it on all day) thanks for any help i can get :)

How is this thing wired?
Analog Cable? Cable with box?

The TV is simply a display. ie - If you turn your PC monitor off, your PC still works like normal - no differently. The same is the case with a TV.

im not stupid....i know this....but everytime we try to record something and the television isnt on it doesnt work.....dont ask me why i thought she was just doing something wrong...it work FINE when the tv is on...but if its off and it record something we go to watch it and it shows up black all the way thorught

Unless it's wired in such a way that the signal is running "thru" the tv to the tivo, it would be odd but I've seen it done.

Are you turning off both the tv AND the cable box?

edited for clarity: the cable box must remain on. Are you inadvertantly turning it off as well?

To elaborate on AppState's comment, some universal remotes will turn off all devices when the power off button is pressed. Or are you using the cable box remote and turing off the TV using a auxillary power output from the cable box which is off when the cable box is off.
