I am really enjoying my Tivo. It is the best purchase regarding TV viewing that I have made in a long time. I have been wondering, however, what is the best state to leave it in when it is not being used?

Right now I have my Harmony 688 remote programed to send the "Tivo" command when I press off. It uses the hard drive 24/7 because it is playing live TV. Now, I always leave my PC's on 24/7 and I do believe it is best to keep a hard drive spinning rather than turn it off and on but I don't know about it reading/writing constantly.

I know there is a standby mode but that is rather akward to get to. How do you leave your Tivo when you're not using it?

You can program a Harmony to put it into standby when you are not using it (which is what I do with mine). Although there is not much difference between standby and regular use. The only major difference is that if you are using COAX cables to connect, it allows a pass through. Otherwise it is still doing everything it normally would even in standby mode.

I leave my TiVo on all of the time.

I have had it for over five years and no problems. :D

I don't leave my PC on 24/7 because I don't see any reason to pay for the electricity to have it running while I'm at work , at the store, sleeping, etc... Every little electricity cost savings counts ya know. I've never had a hard drive failure on my PC.

There are other reasons I leave my PC's on 24/7, not just the hard drives. My calculations show that my PC's cost about $6 a month to run.

I will just keep my setup the way it is and leave the Tivo on all the time. Thanks for the replies.
