Current SD viewer with S1 DTivo, probably switching to HD Comcast when I get a new plasma this fall. Can someone please explain to me what the differences/benefits are between the upcoming Comcast Tivo and the upcoming Series 3 Tivo? Will your average Comcast user be able to use the Series 3 just fine instead of a Comcast HD cable box? Are there any negatives to the cablecards that the Series 3 uses? :confused:
I've been living contently in Series 1 DTivo land for 6 years now and this is all kind of a culture shock to me. Have to replace my SD television b/c it's dying and can't imagine getting anything besides an HDTV.
As far as we know, there is no "Comcast Tivo box" - the Comcast offering is expected to be a software download to existing Comcast (Motorola) DVRs.
Yes, the average Comcast user should be able to use a Series 3 just fine.

Current indications are that it will be an opt-in thing with a premium price. There's a thread on avsforum with more details.

The latest rumors indicate that it will be a pay-upgrade to the standard DVR service. In the Denver market (as an example) it's $10 to get HD and DVR service. TiVo service will probably cost more but no one knows how much more.
Comcast has said that they will use the advanced features of the TiVo software, but we don't know what the feature set will be on the Comcast hardware. Likely differences would be....
Series 3
* TiVoCast
* all the other features of TiVo service
* no OnDemand (no 2-way cablecard yet)
* no PPV (no 2-way cablecard yet)
Comcast Motorola 6412 w/ TiVo software
* OnDemand
* PPV
* no TiVoCast (until Comcast integrates it with their data service over the cable line)
Features that might still be up in the air for Comcast (with my own speculations thrown in)
* KidZone (this would be good for Comcast)
* Web-based scheduling (Comcast says this is coming, but they likely mean for iGuide)
* MRV with non-Comcast boxes (a potential revenue protection decision?)
* Product Watch (who would get the advertising revenue?)
* Online services (Yahoo tie-ins might be a conflict for Comcast?)
* TivoToGo (potentially uncomfortable feature for Comcast?)

These are the main features that I want and would be worth it for the extra money per month.
Is there any release time frame for the Comcast TIVO software?
If it has the above features it would be a big series 3 killer and I might have to switch from D*.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=682350Thank you. I've been living comfortably with my DTivo since 1999 and figuring out what I want to do for HDTV has been FUBAR. This all seems like a mess.

Just spoke with Comcast in suburb of Chicago and they say "tivo" on the motorola 6412 is available. The problem is they don't have any details via phone or on their site. I'm trying to dig up some info, but it seems to be in short supply. Do we know of anyone who has either signed up or beta tested the tivo download for comcast? (It seems as they are offering on the phone anyway)

Really?
Cool... (I'll have to ask Comcast tomorrow when they return my call)
My Brother In Law is still a comcast subscriber... and is need of updating to the digital plan.
It would be the perfect thing to get him there.

If you dont get OTA or aren't happy with the 5 networks (4 confirmed but I hear CW is already up in philly) that directv carries, cable simply is your only choice.
Unless of course you are happy with the hdpack. or waiting for the new dvr
