It was amazing that the PVR is built-in to the HDTV.
Where can I get one of those?!

Interesting...two shows now and two references to "Home Depot." I wonder what that's all about...

At the big reveal onstage, I kept expecting him to get some detail wrong and have to figure it out and do it all again like last week. Although, I guess we can expect he'll be right when he has the entire regular cast on hand.

Did you notice that the orange juice in the diner kept rising? Bad editing.

Was the conclusion of the mystery confusing for others? The rookie cop seems to say that the food was tested and "nothing was confirmed" or words to that effect, then she says she is sorry but it wasn't clear who she was talking to. It seemed to me that there were one or more bad edits in that segment. I played the scene a couple of times and it never did make much sense to me. The male cop character as well as the sidekick character are both poorly written and performed, IMHO. I want to like this show but it only gets one more viewing here before the SP goes away.

This episde was awful. It was cringe inducing to watch him "reveal" the answer. Who didn't realize that 1953 was a year?
And rcobourn, I believe that she was saying there was no poison in the food. That is correct. The guy put in seafood and the Spell Master was deathly allergic.

I find the main character to be unappealing. Perhaps a different portrayal could have left me with a feeling other than that he is gloating over putting one over on the ignorant, but this one does not. An individual whose life is centered around deceit is repellent.

Okay... then why did the father claim testing revealed poison? Was he just messing with him?
Yep, this episode was a mess.

I think the female officer was saying that the results weren't definite yet, but indicated that some type of poison was present.
I believe she apologized either to her partner or the Chief (or both) for having the food analyzed behind their backs.
I also think the male officer wears eye liner, which is really, really weird and bugs me every time I see him. They guy already looks and acts like Chandler from Friend's evil twin, going all Alice Cooper on his eyes isn't going to help!
I like the characters and actors on this show, but they're straining so much to keep the phony psychic angle going that it really distracts from the show. I realize they'd be losing the whole hook of the show, but I think it would be a good move to have the main character just come clean and admit he's the modern incarnation of Sherlock Holmes and be done with it.
Can't see that happening, though.

I agree. I want to like this show, and it's interesting, but that whole "freaking out in psychic visions" thing is getting old.
And since this show runs in Monk's old time slot, and is paired with it now, it reminds me of the intense reactions Monk gets that push him over the top (remember "Panic Room", anyone?). It's almost like the fake psychic "visions" are a cornerstone of this show.
I still have hope for the father-son relationship, though. Corbin Bernsen is great as dad. But I'm gonna have to start feeling better about watching the main character...

I also have to agree. The psychic reveal bits are too slapstick. It throws off the tone of the show.
The Corbin Bernsen scenes in this last episode were much more interesting than the main story. His character is well written, as is the complex relationship that he has with his son. I like him in this one! "The Dentist" movies are becoming a distant memory now...
So let's get the main plot just as interesting, tone down the slapstick, and we've got a hit on our hands. ;)

The one thing I liked about this episode was that he kept figuring stuff out, and then had to find a way to communicate the information to the cops without letting on that he just figured it out. They didn't actually do it very cleverly this time, but the basic concept has promise...

See, that's the thing that bugs me about the show. :) I can't wrap my head around the fact that he can't just say, "hey, I'm really smart and I figured this out."

Because the cops don't have any time for really smart people who figure stuff out. They believe that's THEIR job.
But psychics DO get hired from time to time, because they provide an alleged service that the police can't do for themselves.
(Which to me, in real life anyway, proves that the police are, in fact, desperately in need of really smart people, or even just not-brain-dead people.)

I don't doubt that it's product placement, but it's also a character trait of his dad. Don't you know someone who goes to Home Depot a lot? I know plenty.

I think I agree. I really enjoyed the whole segment where his Dad got him to complete a project for once in life and it only took 15+ years.
My guess is that the dad told the "interim" captain what's really going on. And she is going along with it both as a favor to an old friend and as a way to hire a really smart, really observant consultant without offending the police officers union.

I'm liking the show, although I will agree that the crazy contortions he does when he is faking like he is having visions is lame and distracting. However, that's minor. I like the characters and the premise so I'll keep watching.
I also was not at all confused about the final part where the new cop apologized. I thought it was clear that she had the food analyzed without authorization but it did come back positive for poison. One thing that did bug me was that they didn't make the fake bee champion pull out the fake inhaler. They just let him stick it in his pocket.

I'm digging this show a whole lot. The funny faces he's doing is really over-the-top, but I think that makes the show funny. He's so obviously faking it, but no one has any other explanation on how he's solving the cases that they go along with it.

By the way, since nobody has pointed it out yet, the show is called "Psych" not "Psyched."

I have watched both episodes and liked the pilot much better then this one. I do really enjoy the Dad and in this ep. I liked the sidekick and how he was all over the top about the spelling bee.
How could 1953 be anything OTHER then a year? Come on!
And yes, the psychic wobbles are a bit extreme. He could find a way to fake it like Whoopie did in Ghost - and not seem so wild.
I do really enjoy the little nuances that he notices and no one else does. But that is something that I like about Monk too.
My favorite moment was the commercial that had Johnny from Dead Zone, the Psych guy and Monk all at the same diner.

Now I'm confused.... Isn't the psychic supposed to be Shawn Spencer, the lead character? It was quite obvious in this show that the real psychic was the boy's father who was driving the van that ran Shawn down on his motorcycle. He hadn't been following him and didn't run him off the road from behind so he must've been psychic to have known that 1) he was going to be riding his motorcycle and 2) where he'd be riding it so that he could drive at him head on and run him off the road. ;)
Monk occasionally has episodes where the "clues" seem a little far fetched and forced and I'm sure that will happen a lot in this show but as others have mentioned, the characters are the main reason to watch. The father/son interactions are great and there will be plenty of places to go with that combo. And Dule Hill has surprised me - he had a great line that I'll have to paraphrase that made me laugh out loud, "Don't diss the bee!"

1953 was obviously a year, but what was Shawn supposed to do with that information? He hadn't gotten any context for year numbers yet. Once they got the brochure about winning words per year, things started falling into place.

You knew that it pointed to a cheating kid because they were using winning words from previous year's spelling bees and that kid was the kid that got the word from 1953 and that the kid's father poisoned the guy to cover that up
or
You knew it was a year that indicated something to someone somewhere somehow

I knew it was a year. Instantly. I hadn't made the other connections yet.
With that knowledge, if I were trying to be a detective, I'd presumably - at some point - realize that there are spelling bees every year...and try to figure out what was special about 1953.

But there wasn't anything special about the bee that year, as it happens.

I like the show, I like the father-son dynamics and the two friends, and I like that his psychic episodes are obviously fake.
I thought that 1953 must be a year (I think any four digit number beginning with 19-- is a year first), but I didn't know why it would be relevant . . .

I noticed that this show is appearing on NBC now too? wth? Its the spelling bee episode tonihgt but it will be in HD so that's something.
I've liked it so far, however I do see the whole bit becoming old quickly if they don't mix it up. I felt th same about Monk and it was great until they changed his assistant.

We love this show. Yep, same complaint about the "episodes"...they look more like seizures than a psychic vision. Other than that, loving it. Dulle Hill made a great transition from West Wing to this and it's great to see Corbin again, although I'm not really liking the police guy much. I did like him on Judging Amy, but not so much here...could be the character rather than the actor though. This one's staying on our list.

P.S. I'm glad someone cleared up the title of this thread...I wasn't sure everyone was talking about Psych for a little bit, so kept reading until the storyline finally sounded familiar (it's been a while since seeing that first episode).

Ok, this overacting by the lead character is really starting to get annoying...mostly because I'm afraid it's going to get the show cancelled and I think it has potential. I just finished tonight's episode (can't remember the name of it, but it's the one with the "suicides". Decent enough episode, just more overacting that is just too unbelievable. Also, they are doing a really good job at making police look incredibly stupid. Wish they'd give it a little more credibility and it might last.
