Can existing HR10(Tivo) owners get free upgrade to HR20(non-Tivo), once it comes out?
I just realized there's nothing to stop a customer with leased HR10 HD DirecTivo
from calling DirecTV and demand a free upgrade to HR20. (either due to the fact
that the HR10 won't record HD Locals via DirecTV, or simply having a HR10 gone
bad)
Any thoughts on this?

The lady I spoke to at rentention in order to get my free H10 Tivo, gave me the option of a new H20 DTV Mpeg4 receiver instead....it was up to me.

Right now, there is no confirmed information.
But all "indications" are that there will be some upgrade/swap-out for HR10 to HR20

Sorry, but going from TiVo to some crap-box that happens to have an MPEG4 chip in it is not an "upgrade" at all.

Just because the R15 has some issues and some people don't care for it's interface... doesn't mean the HR20 is going to be a "crap-box"
To each their own.

My prediction is that their won't be a blanket free upgrade.
They will offer free upgrades in select markets where they roll out HD-LIL, free upgrades to HD-Sunday Ticket customers, etc.

I'd like to keep my HR10, it is afterall MINE and not DirecTV's. What would they do with it anyhow?
I would also however, like to try out the HR20 box without paying an arm and a leg for it, only time will tell, but I will not SWAP my HR10, that I paid for, to blindly try the HR20.

I just got the free hd tivo dvr upgrade and was told I would be "upgraded" to the new mpeg 4 unit when it comes out, I am in the Detroit metro area.

So is it assumed the "upgrade" cost will be different for the HR10 vs. the H20? If not, it would make sense to get an H20 now (they can be had for free right now) and then trade that in for the HR20 (and keep the HR10)...I know getting the H20 would add $4.99 per month but that may end up being cheaper (and you could keep the HR10)...

I got the h20 free today, and hopefully it will work for me exactly as you described. When the newer D* HD DVR comes out, i will swap the h20 for that, and the hr10-250 will go into my bedroom as I have a 30 inch HDTV in there.
If that newer dvr is not too bad, i would possibly swap the tivo for that so I could have 2 mpg4 HD DVR. It kind of sucks to have baseball games in HD from the RSN and go to bed and then have to start watching the game in SD cause I wouldnt have an mpg4 receiver in the bedroom.
In any event, I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO LOSE by getting the free H20 and 5 lnb dish right now.

Hey Vertigo - does D* know it's yours? I purchased one as well and haven't called them back to correct my account - it still says leased. Obviously, I'm not giving it back to them (I don't intend to upgrade). Just curious.

When you lease a box and then want to give it back, do you have to pay the shipping, etc or does D* send you a box with a shipping label?

I assume so, although I've never had a conversation with them about it since I purchased it.
Where would I find out?

For many folks, the "free" upgrade from the 3lnb dish/mpeg-2 HD receiver to the 5LNB dish/mpeg-2/4 HD receiver cost $99
I could see them doubling that price for an HD DVR swap.

When I called today I was just inquiring about what the costs would be to go from the 3lnb to 5 lnb dish and the h20. If there was any cost, i likely would have nixed it. She told me I "qualify" for a free upgrade.
At that point my thoughts were same as yours. No telling what costs could be in a fe wmonths, so I jumped on it.

Don't confuse a free upgrade to the H20 with an upgrade to the HR20 - there's a big difference!

Since I own my HR10-250, I won't be swapping it out even when HD locals become available in my area. If I decide to get HD locals from DirecTV, then I'll get the HR20, but keep the HR10 as a second HD DVR for conflicts (OTA HD and DirecTV SD).

I was doing no such thing. If the hr20 costs xxx amount, I can either do it or not. But no matter what happens, ill be able to get the RSN in HD NOW and will have gotten the appropriate dish for nothing, so where is the risk??
The Hr10 I have is leased, so id bet I could either swap it out for minimal fee, or get the hr20 for a minimal fee and keep the hr10 for another room.
I have had D* since 98, and I have NEVER paid for a single receiver that I have. Dont expect that to change anytime soon, even though some on here seem to be waiting for D-day.

i just got the upgrade to the hd10- 250 from standard def tivo. i dont want to upgrade the unit till they make me (i get ota hd perfectly, and as a backup when the rare signal fade takes over) but when will they force us by switching all the hd channels to mpeg4 new sats? won't that happen evntually?

In theory, but that's probably a couple years away at the earliest. More likely you'll feel pressure to move when new national HD channels come around that are MPEG4-only.
