hey guys I just made the leap from DTIVO to HDTIVO HR10-250 via retention deal. I have a sony 60in widescreen with dvi input. the dtv installer hooked it up via component. My questions are, I hate gray bars so I selected full on the tivo setup menu, is this okay? I am no longer able to adjust screen size via my tv set anymore. Next question is do I leave the format on the HD receiver set to 1080i?
Also there was no hdmi cable in my box when the installer left I looked in the box, do all these receivers come with an hdmi cable?

thanks

Yes leave it at 1080i. Your pic will look great. 720p is also a good format. play around and find the one you like. personally I can't really see a diff between the two and I leave it a 1080i
enjoy

My HR10-250 came with both HDMI to HDMI and HDMI to DVI cables in the box.

Yes, they all come with an HDMI to HDMI cable and an HDMI to DVI cable. If yours were missing than someone stole them. Replacements are easy to get and cheap on line. Try Ebay or do a google search. I encourage you to get another DVI to HDMI cable so you can use the DVI input on your TV. Assuming your TV is not CRT based (is LCD or SXRD) you will get a slightly sharper picture using the DVI input. I do.

my tv is an lcd/rptv combo. I will call dtv and tell them my hdmi is missing or should I call the company that was contracted by dtv?

It will be easier and faster to buy one on line for $6 or so than to fight with the thieves who stole yours. They will deny it and say they were not included. This is a lie, they are included.

to suggest he pay for stolen stuff is nuts. The DTV manual clearly states an array of stuff to be included. 5 different cables are included

Call directv and say you didnt get everything in the box and you aren't sure if the installer 'forgot' or what. I'm sure they use those cables themselves or sell them.

it's illegal and DTV needs to know this in case it's a more widespread problems.

plus you are just giving that installer the satisfaction of ripping you off

just got off the phone with both the installer and dtv, the installer said he never took it, they probably forgot to pack it. I then called dtv and they informed that in order to send me a cable I would have to send back the receiver in the box and they would send out a new one. I will take your advice and just buy a cable.

One other thing I dont notice a difference right now in pic quality. I was filpping between HD showtime and standard and the pics looked the same, I currently have component hookup, is this why?

is the HDtivo set to something other than 480?

also it's BS about the cable..even under their lame system..they send out advanced replacements so you dont have downtime...

it's just the principle..i hate people being taken advantage of

What was Showtime showing at the time.
Could very well be a program that wasn't available in HD,
or your TV is automatically stretching the picture to fit.

Not everything on Showtime (or HBO) is in HD, even on the HD channel. If the movie you are watching IS in HD on the HD channel you should see a pretty big difference between the HD and low def channel.

program descriptions are generally pretty good..see if they are HD or not.

It's not worth it for anyone to take legal action over a company for a cable... I would also just go to ebay or even Wal-Mart and get one...If you go to Best Buy, don't let those guys talk you into buying the $150 Monster HDMI cable...it's not worth the money that you pay for it..the only "good" thing about HDMI is of course, it has audio and video...nothing else special about it...still has the same capabilities as component or DVI cables...I can understand the principle of the situation, but DTV is not going to do anything about the missing cables...and as I have been told many, many times...he signed off on the work order stating that everything was fine...he would have no case..

so i dont need any audio with HDMI, I currently have an optical cable from my hd dvr to my receiver.

also get this, my installer was supposed to be here between 10-12, called to say he is running behind will be there between 12-1, then called again and said will be there at 1:45 at the latest. 2pm still nobody, I called the install company and they said he is 20 minutes away, he calls me 5 minutes later and asks for directions. Finally gets here at 2:30, and asks where I want the receiver, I told him it was a swap out for my DTIVO to deactivate the DTIVO and Activate the HD DVR. He hooks up the new dish and attaches my current wires to the new dvr and nothing no signal on HD. It took him about 20 minutes to realize that he needs to run more than the original 2 lines from the dish and he need to install a 6x8 multiswitch, he does that and instantly it works. This guy is supposed to know how to install. The kicker, I find out yesterday that he never deactivated my DTIVO.
