I noticed a very strange thing this weekend. When I checked my signal strength (due to frequent loss of picture during rainstorms) I discovered that all my odd transponders had no signal and all the even number transponders had a very strong signal. Could this be due to a cable problem i.e. cable off one side of the switch is fine and off the other side is bad? Any suggestions

Cable, Multiswitch, or LNB has gone bad.
Also possible the tuner on the unit has gone bad
You don't have that cable split with an ordinary splitter do you?

no splitter,
as for figuring out where the source of the probem is, I assume I would switch the two cables coming off the dish and if the odd -bad even- good flip flops its cables. If not its LNB right? I have multiable Dtivos in the house with the same issues so I don't think its the receiver.

If you are having it with MULTIPLE units... then it is probably the LNB (or the multiswitch if you have one).

With multiple units, then there is a downstream multiswitch. And assuming the round dual LNB dish, check the cable from the dish to the 13v/0kHz connection on the downstream switch. Bypass the switch to see what happens.

yep although covered in the multiswitch sticky (which you shoudl read!) the LNB inputs have switches that get switched to one half the signal or another (or quarter if you have a triple dish) based upon the type of electrical current sent up. What is happening to your setup is that some switch somwhere isn't going to the right position. 9/10 of the time this is because voltage isn't reaching that switch, and it's almost always a bad cable.
You can test cables niceley with a volt-ohm meter. Testing by tongue-touch can be painful, but not harmful, unless something is grounding out from the home's power supply (which could very well fry your tongue) When installing, I witnessed one time this happened, and when I unscrewed the sat-in connection, it arced, melting the metal on the unit in a small spot of the SAT in.
Red goes to copper, and black goes to the outside "F" connector. IF you get 18 or 13 volts from the plugged-in receiver...(or the 2 voltages alternate) you have a good cable to that point, electrically speaking. 17 volts is not a problem. 16 or lower can be. Readings should be 13 volts plus or minus 1.5 for odd transponders and 18 volts +- 1.5 for even. It may alternate between the two if it's a reset box searching for sat. If that all checks out, go higher. towards the dish, and check there. If everything checks out all the way up, you may be the one in a thousand odd-even problems that the LNB is the cause of.

I had same issue earlier this year. Techs replaced multiswitch and problem went away. Been fine since.
