I do the same, and not just on Hell's Kitchen. I FF through the same scenes on The Apprentice as well. Talk about a time saver.

In the promo for the episode, they mentioned that a celebrity will be coming to the restaurant. I must have missed it. Does anyone know who the celebrity guest was?

Mr. Happypants
07-11-2006, 10:41 PM
Nope, and I even stopped about halfway through & asked the Wife™ about that. Maybe the "celebrity" was involved in a last-minute embarrassing public situation, or just plain had their footage pulled from the show for some reason.

They don't need any celebs anyway, the abuse from Chef Ramsey keeps me coming back every week! Almost makes MY Boss seem like a saint.

Almost. ;)

I almost feel bad for chef ramsey this year man the contestants are horrible. I just hope he is up for another year because I could see him saying **** it after this year. These contestants are so bad this year I am rooting for them to screw up so ramsey can go nuts on them.

Not to pick on smokers but if I were a chef and taste was very important I would not smoke. I noticed that lots of the people on the show smoked. Do you think that matters very much?

I was thinking the same thing. Do chefs smoke more than the population as a whole or is it just because they pick "white trash" for contestants?

I originally thought "K Grease" wouldn't have a shot, but he's apparently a decent cook, at least according to Ramsey's conversation with him this episode.

speaking of chef questions..how in the world can you taste a fresh (whatever) straight out of the pan/over when it has to be at least 200+ degrees right? Wouldn't burning your tongue continuously hurt your taste worse than cigs?

Sara..class act....ive seen women like that at certain sites i visit and always wondered if they had sisters that talked like that. Now I know they do. dont people care about their own decency? I dont care what others per se think of me but i also would never 'draw attention' to myself in the ways she has.

do you think when sara watches at home she thinks she's cool or acting normal? That's what i want to know. her parents failed miserably

OH and if you like gordon in this show, dont watch the bbc show. it just makes this one so much more 'fake' because he obviously drums up stuff just for fox.

anyone thing rach and heather were a bit too close? and what we didnt see?

I like the show, but these people just look like line cooks to me - and some of them are pretty bad at that. I'd like to see the format of Bravo's 'Top Chef' where people actually create dishes, adding in Ramsey's antics and the pressure of cooking for people every night.

Would you trust a million-dollar restaurant in a multi-million dollar resort to ANY of these people?

Wouldn't burning your tongue continuously hurt your taste worse than cigs? You have to take a small bit of whatever you're cooking, blow on it a bit to cool it off, then taste. It doesn't take long for a small bit to cool off.

Is it me, or do these cooking competition (Hells Kitchen, Top Chef) shows pick at most 1 or 2 "chefs" and a bunch of doofus's? It also seem's to me that the producers picked contestants so that they would get a female winner this time around. Maybe because men won Top Chef and Hell's Kitchen S1?

Contest- Who's the most evil self centered cooking show contestant

Tiffani (top chef S1) vs Sara (Hells Kitchen S2)

Anyone see Ralph (runner up Hells kitchen S1) get beaten down Iron Chef America. He was arguably the least competent chef they've had on that program.

Whoa, are you saying smokers are "white trash"?

No I am saying an abnormally high number of people we think of as "White Trash" are smokers.

White Trash doesnt necessarily require you be poor from Arkansas. I think in this we have a quite diverse group that fits the mold.

As already mentioned, I think they picked a couple of people they expect to win and the rest for entertainment purposes. After all Ramsey picks/kicks them.

I kind of wonder last year when he offered the training in London to the winner at the last moment, if he felt the guy had real potential and wanted to nurture him or if he wanted to keep him from hurting his reputation. After all people will go their saying this is the place with that hells kitchen chef.

I wonder what the rules of the winning prize are? You run the show, you run a shift, you run a station, you design some meals, you smile for the public and get your name on entrees for 6 months.

I associate white trash to behavior. saying and expressing yourself without thinking how it will come back to you later. IE Girls gone wild.

The quick thrill doesnt go away. People would argue this but I personally associate tatoos to white trash as they may feel fun for the moment but 30 years down the road they are still there saying you love Bobby Jean.

Smoking is less than 25% of the population but on this show its darn near 100%. I would guess its more common in lower rank workers, I am wondering if its also common in the higher rank workers such as head chefs, etc.

Common meaning greater than the 25% average society as a whole.

I get what you're saying, and probably you and I would agree on a lot of people we both would consider white trash. But on the whole I don't try to generalize everyone I see who smokes and has tatoos as white trash, and I'm sure you don't either. I watch a show on A&E called Inked (about a tatoo parlor) and a lot of the people come in to get tatoos to remind them of an event in their lives such as surviving cancer or surviving Hurricane Katrina. To me that's not trivial or a rash decision. I would never get a tatoo myself, but I can now understand that some tatoos I see on people might mean more to them than "this was my girlfriend in 1987".

As far as the smoking goes, I'd say you're right about lower rank workers smoking more than upper class. I live in a factory town and smoking is unfortunately a big part of life around here. It's ironic to me, because the lower income workers have less money to blow, yet they choose to blow it on something as silly as smoking. JMHO, please no one flame me for that. :p

Valid point. I wonder statistically how many tattoos fit in which camp: frivolous vs life changing memory.

My webshots desktop reminds me everyday of events in my life.

I suppose if I was sitting in a bar at 2AM and I am an alcoholic looking over at somebody that set me up for a "John Belushi" event. That tatto might just stop me.

I was happy with last years contestants over this years. I have to agree with an early comment that some of these so called "chefs" seem more like line cooks but that is only my opinion from working in the restaurant industry for a couple years and seeing a kitchen run.

Not when you consider that they can both be used to remind one of a particular time in your life. That's not to say that tattoos are always used for that purpose, but it is to say that they CAN be used for that purpose... just like photos, trophys, awards, purple hearts, a flower folded up in a book given to you by your deceased spouse, or anything else that one chooses to use as a momento. A tattoo can be used by someone as a momento if they choose it. Just because it is a picture on your body as opposed to being hung on the wall doesn't make it any less meaningful to the person who wants it there.

For example, if Sara was watching this particular episode the other night, she might have lifted her leg and fired one off just to remind herself of how it felt to be in the photo shoot that day. :D

Its back to behavior and its effect on other people. There are tattoos that are discrete and in out of the way places. That only you or possibly your SO will see. Then there are tattoos that scream loudly (like facial piercings). These are there more so to make a public statement.

That public statement will naturally divide you from a large segment of society.

Also when you have to wear a strapless gown to a wedding of a good friend its just not going to look good. Pictures and other forms of rememberances can be temporarily moved to another room. Your not permanently stuck with it.

I suppose you could say "White Trash" = bad manners. Manners are simply devices we have created in society to make our guests feel comfortable and especially when those guests are perfect strangers.

Some would say they should just accept me for who I am. But thats basically a selfish point of view.

You're right, some people do think less of others with tattoos, and I feel sorry for people who are that judgmental. I have a friend who runs a tattoo shop, is covered in tattoos and is one of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of knowing. I have a boss who has no tattoos, would never get a tattoo and is the biggest piece of white trash I've ever seen in my life.

The similarities between photos and tattoos is this IMHO: they both CAN be used to capture a moment in time. If someone chooses to capture that moment by putting ink on their arm instead of ink on paper, it's none of my business. :)

I totally know what you mean when you say someone with nose piercings and tattoos all over their body can make you feel uncomfortable. But if the person is not bothering me or harassing me in any way other than how they look, is it more selfish of them to look the way they look or is it more selfish of me to expect them to look the way I WANT THEM to look?

How the heck did we get into a white trash discussion in a Hell's Kitchen thread? Sara, oh Sara... :D

In the technical sense I should be able to ignore them but in a practical sense when they choose to do those things they will divide themslves into a small group. That group will make people feel uncomfortable PERIOD. A person with manners will do their best to make people around them comfortable. It is clear there are groups of people who have no desire to do that.

Hells Kitchen is a competition like the other reality shows and some contestants have shown that manners are not important in these venues. It is also makes for good tv and thats why they are casted.

Actually, I think he did say almost exactly that quote to a chef a couple of weeks ago on Kitchen Nightmares.

As far as the celebrity, there was a shot of the last few tickets on the red side. One of them did have VIP written on it pretty largely. I wonder why it was cut?

Either Sara is doing it all on purpose or she is literally crazy the way she acts. How can she say people are acting unprofessionally when she is actually screwing things up on purpose and lying to mess with the other contestants.
