View Full Version : Thouroughly Stumped - Searching for signal

Well, I think I've don my due diligence on the troubleshooting front and I'm thoroughly stumped. At this point I've reduced my setup to an DVR40 with two cables connected directly to the dual LNB on a round dish (no intervening switches, one cable per sattellite). No matter what I do I can't get any signal on the even transponders on Sattellite 2 IN. I've swapped the cables and both work fine when connected to Satellite 1 IN but neither works on Satellite 2 IN except on the odd transponders. The receiver is set up for two inputs and I'm reasonably confident the receiver is okay because my downstairs receiver was having the same problem when I was running through a multiswitch. Also I replaced the LNB for good measure but that didn't help. One hint is that the problem "seems" to be heat related -- Sattellite 2 IN has been working fine in the morning/night but seemed to flake out during sunny days.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If the problem is always on the DVR's SAT2 input even after you swap the satellite cables, then the problem is with the DVR. Your only easy option is to configure this DVR as a single tuner DVR and just use the SAT1 input.

Did you try restarting your DVR?
If that does not work, wou might try swapping cables at the LNB end to verify whether the problem is in the cable.

Interesting. It looks like it is the receiver. Any idea why when I had two receivers set up on a multiswitch they both showed the same problem? That's what made me assume the problem was on the satellite side of the switch. I guess I could have saved myself alot of roof time if my due diligence had been a little more diligent.
I'm still confused as to why it only seems to happen on warmer days during the afternoon and why I first lose one signal then the second but both come back later in the day.
Thanks for the help litzdog911 and wscannell. :) :)

Heat can change impedence and resistance properties, and black cable DOES warm up. Are your cables long? What signal do you have on odd/even when you DO have it...is there a large difference between the two (more than 5%) ? if so, consider amplification "in-line amplifiers."
