My workhorse Sony T-60 receiver keeps saying that is too hot and its overheating and it shuts it's self off.

It must be the fan, I did a search and I guess the only place that sells it is weaknees but I am all thumbs.

Should I try to fix it myself or is it too old to bother?

Any suggestions is appreaciated.

It is 4 screws to take the lid off, and 4 more screws to remove the fan. That's pretty simple, but if you don't want to do it yourself, you could find someone who works on computers and ask them to do it.

What temperature is it reporting on the System Information screen?

Can you hear the fan spinning?

If you do venture into the unit to replace the fan yourself, it is easy, be careful to not touch the power supply.

Unplug the unit ASAP before the drive or power supply goes. Take the cover off after cooling down and then plug back in see if you can see the fan turning. If not then re-unplug it and get your self a 60mm computer case fan. You can get it from a computer supply store or if you are a little nutz radio shack has them for $20 (#273-0239). Even if you are all thumbs if you are a little handy you can change the fan yourself. You will need a torx driver to get the cover off and to remove the screws that hold the hard drive carrier on. The fan is mounted to the carrier. Try to get a good ball bearing fan as it will last longer then a sleeve bearing fan. Wire it backup and plug the unit back in to make sure the fan is running. As others have said if you do not want to do it yourself any place that does computer repair can do it easily. If you can get the fan and make an appointment with a shop they may do it while you wait. It will take no more the 15min to make the change.

good luck,

I might try that rock_doctor, unplug it and see if the fan is running. And Jim i will check the system to see the temperature, I cant hear the fan spinning.

I do know some dudes that know more about computer repair then I do , and might ask them to do it for me.
