My dear to my heart DSR7000 is now rebooting seemingly randomly (after about 3 years of flawless service). I have yet to really troubleshoot it yet, but it has got me thinking on new technology.

My question is should I use this chance to upgrade to a new Directivo unit (H10) or should I take steps to get/repair my DSR7000

Does the R10 offer anything over the DSR7000?

Thanks,

-Eldon

edit - Yes, I meant the R10...

I think you mean the R10.

H10 is standalone receiver, IIRC.

R15 is the newest DirecTV DVR, and is not powered by TiVo.

The R10 (not the H10) does not add any functionality over the DSR7000. If you ever feel like hacking the units the DSR7000 is much more easily hacked. If you have some basic computer hardware skills you can fix the DSR7000 yourself. See http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php or http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/index9.html. If you want a pretty much plug-n-play fix then go to http://www.ptvupgrade.com or http://www.weaknees.com/tivo-upgrade.php. With the plug-n-play fix you will loose all your settings and recordings.

Thanks guys, As an aside.. with random reboots (and a black screen lockup every so often), would you think it's my harddrive finally giving out, the power supply, the fan, or something major.

I'll probally tear into it a bit tonight so I'm hoping it's something as easy as the fan, although a hard drive replacement wouldn't be horrible either...

It is most likely the hard drive failing. If the temperture gets high it could also cause it to reboot.

I have a dsr7000. I want to upgrade the original drive to 6.2. If I buy one of the replacement drives from weeknees will my unit require a phone in. I am from canada and wont be able to get it to call in.

Thanks,
