Tried to look this up but couldn't find any references to it. Is there a way (other than going through each show manually on Now PLaying and adding up the percentages) to find out how much percentage of the hard drive is still available (or currently used for that matter)?

Your TiVo is almost always "full", so the easiest way is to count up the number of Suggestions you have recorded and the number of Recently Deleted items to give you the number of hours you have available.

do a search on FSI
"Free Space Indicator"

be sure to open up a month of Sundays to read it all :p
NOTE- look in the hME section there are PC apps that will do what you ask

Try TiVoPlayList which can be found here (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/showthread.php?t=293241)

That is just not true.

so the easiest way is to count up the number of Suggestions you have recorded and the number of Recently Deleted items to give you the number of hours you have available.

Hello? anybody home? not everyone uses suggestions.

If I have 112 suggestions (basic quality) and 0 recently deleted items I have 112 hours of capacity to use for 'real' recordings? I don't think so. I have an 80GB drive with nothing but suggestions filling up it's 89 hour capacity.

I just DL TiVoPlayList. Not the best, but does do the trick. Thanks for the link.

This will do exactly what you're looking for...

Also in that linked discussion is an app called "TiVoPIE" which has a much nicer display than the above referenced TiVoPlaylist and wont give you any security "certificate" issues that many have experienced with it.

I certainly didn't say it's an exact science. That's why I put "full" in quotes because once you get into using it, either your shows will be recorded, in the recently deleted, or as suggestions. It doesn't matter if you have suggestions turned off because then you would have 0 suggestions but shows will stay much longer in the Recently Deleted folder and will accumulate there.

If you have 112 suggestions + recently deleted, of course a bunch of those are half-hour shows so you have to account for that. This will give you a good idea of how much space you have, but no exact numbers. If you want the numbers, then you have to download the programs already posted.

I was one of the biggest proponents of a FSI (and still am, actually). I also used TiVoPlayList and others. But I have now found that the Recently Deleted folder solved about 98% of my concerns. It's a quick & easy way to see how much space is avail for new recordings.

I only have series 1s, so this is just for my curiousity.

How is it any quick and easier than counting the number/size of suggestions?
Is the Recently Deleted folder at the bottom of the list?* If so, you still have to scroll to the bottom.

I'm not meaning to argue with you, I'm just curious.* One small benefit that I see is that suggestions + recently deleted items gives you a more accurate picture of the free disk space (I always have to remember how many things I deleted in the last session of watching if I'm out of suggestions and something is about to record).

It may or may not be easier than suggestions. I don't use 'em, so I don't know. Don't want 'em

Telling someone that all they have to do is xyz, is ridiculous when doing xyz is only possible under certain circumstances which may not even apply to the person with the question. You are also are neglecting the fact the items can be removed from both the now playing list and from the RD folder and many people choose to do just that on a regular basis.

My point about my own 112 suggestions was meant to show again how ridiculously wrong your suggestion was.

"TiVo, TV your way." - Why do so many people not understand this concept?

I like using my Recently Deleted folder as a good indicatior. I do not use Suggestions, and have no desire to. The benefit of using the recently deleted folder is the info is on the TiVo. My computer with TiVoPlayList is in another room in the house and if I want to look at this info I do not want to get off the couch, go downstairs, launch the application, wait for the program info to load etc. Using the Recently Deleted Folder is more convenient since it is only a couple of clicks away. As the Recently Deleted folder shrinks to a lower number of items the HD is getting full, and a higher number indicates more available space. So, as I see the number getting close to 0, I know there is not much space available. This is not perfect, but it works for me.

Actually it applies to everyone, not just certain situations. Things automatically stay in Recently deleted until the TiVo needs more space and then they are removed and new things are recorded. The only circumstance where there is free space but it's not in suggestions or recently deleted is if the user manually goes in and deletes things from there. And that would be a special case...most people just leave things until they go away. There's no benefit to deleting them manually.

I don't know why you are so against this approximation. This has always been the standard answer to this question in many differnet threads, even before Recently Deleted existed. Now that Recently Deleted is here, there's an even better approximation.

I thought the RD folder would solve most of my FSI needs, but since you can't see it from your networked TiVo's I've had to keep Suggestions on on all of those - either that or periodically walk around the house checking each individual TiVo, and I AM NOT doing that! :D

But as I said, if you use ONLY recently deleted, your free space indication will be EVEN less accurate than using suggestions.. since nothing will 'fill up' the empty space until you have more recordings and delete them.
