View Full Version : Dog ate remote -- time for a new DTV receiver?

Our new puppy just ate the remote to our Hughes HDVR2. So I've got a few options here. I can order a replacement remote (I can't seem to find a local dealer who has these in stock), or I could consider taking this opportunity to replace the receiver.
I've seen messages that the new DTV receivers don't match up to the TiVo versions (which is what I have). True? Is there a model that I should be considering, and perhaps an upgrade that's recommended? Or should I just get the replacement remote and wait for things to shake out in the DTV world?
Is there a good universal remote that would work with my model that I can purchase in a local store, like Best Buy, Radio Shack, et al? That might be my best option.
Looking for sage advice ...

Just check Ebay for Directv TiVo remotes. You should be able to find the same remote for $20 or less without much looking around.

Just get a remote from TiVo. The DirecTiVo uses the same remote. http://www.tivo.com/2.7.1.asp

Check ebay for the silver peanut remotes being offered. They were made for the Thomson UK SA Tivos but will work with all SA and DTV models except Sonys. You can pick one up for about $4-6 plus shipping. They'll work fine with your HDVR2.

check eBay for the One For All URC-6131. It'll cost you about $10-$15 (refurbished is fine) and is a great universal remote with PVR support. Do a quick search in this forum for URC-6131 and you'll get lots of
Also, there are 2 models out there URC-6131 and URC-6131n. IMHO the URC-6131 is vastly superior to the 'n' model. (mostly due to button placement and ergonomics of the remote)

Here are the remotes that I have settled on. These are the original Tivo series 2 remotes and can be set to control 2 tivos in the same room which is great.
Here is the link

Wow ... thanks for the help, folks. I did put a bid on the URC-6131 on eBay ... and may even go pick one up from Best Buy ('cause I think it'll take a while longer to train our puppy not to eat remotes). The one on eBay isn't the "n" model, which I guess is good. And I'm floored at all the regular peanut style remotes on eBay. Much relief. Thanks!

Thanks!Just be aware that (to my knowledge) Best Buy now only carries the 'n' model - regardless of what their website would have you believe. I was burned on that once, when I ordered the remote online and picked it up only to receive a URC-6131n. I returned it promptly and went to eBay. Good luck! :)

Well, because I needed the remote asap -- and had a Best Buy gift card -- I purchased the 'n' model. I can always get the other model on eBay. However, I can't get this remote to work with the codes that they provide for the Hughes HDVR2. Anyone know of a sure-fire code? Frustrating.

You have choice of PVR 0618, which is already preset to the PVR device key, and SAT 1142.

A couple of good resources for that remote:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/advanced.shtml (how to program advanced codes)
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa/adv-codes.shtml (advanced codes list)
Even if you can't get every button to do what you want with the 'simple' setup, I've found that I can get pretty much everything working by setting individually keys using the advanced codes.

Or as another option, you can go to:

They have almost any remote you would be looking for. That's where one of my friends got his replacement peanut remote..it only cost him about $20, but I just checked the site and it now costs $59.95...I would stick with ebay...

My wife didn't like the black peanut remote because it kept sliding off the table when she pressed a button without picking it up, so I bought her one of the RC23 TiVo/dTiVo remotes. It works great with my HDVR2 and her Philips DSR704 and she loves it. Although the back is still somewhat rounded, it is rubberized. DTV sells them, but check out this auction (#200004633020) on eBay. You can probably pick up this 4 pack for $20 or so. I bought one for $12 (BIN w/shipping) then saw a four pack the next week for $16 with no bidders when it closed. Maybe that will feed the dog for a while
