Anyone know when TiVo will release TiVo-to-Go for Mac?

It's long overdue.

sorry - none of the other threads produced any info either.

in short TiVo inc. has not given any actual date for it and just some general sometime middle of this year. The lack of a more specific date does not bode well.

In the event that Tivo is listening:
[1] If you don't start supporting your Mac users, and
[2] You don't upgrade your hardware to High-Def,

You are going to lose me as a customer....

Not to sound rude but as much as TiVo values its customers I dont think losing just one customer would make the mac thing high on their priority list. I us a PC myself but I will agree a TiVo To Go for macs is long over due...

which is more important to you - TTG mac or HD
it looks like TiVo is focused on HD both for the series 3 and Comcast boxes.
I am thinking they think that will draw/keep more Customers than TTG Mac

From an overall corporate focus, that's almost certainly true. However, it's unlikely that the people working on their HD projects would be the same people working on the Mac projects (not impossible, but the knowledge required is different enough that it's likely to be different folks.) The projects are also quite different in scope.

In any case, TiVoPony gave a "mid-2006" estimate for Mac TivoToGo. By my math, mid-2006 ends at the end of August. We are talking software, so a slightly fuzzier boundary between mid- and late- might be expected, but TiVo of late seems to be taking the tack of shipping something on the dates they promise, even if they have to update it with a patch to fix up lingering issues shortly thereafter.

very true on the technical scope, I completely agree - I was just thinking of the financial resources scope.

I'm thinking TiVo is using the same calendar as the Microsoft folks are using for Vista and Office 2007. :p

Seriously, getting DRM working on OSX is a bit harder than Windows and I think TiVo wants to make sure they "get it right" before they release anything. Also, I think resources at TiVo are a bit more constrained due to its size. Their bigger "cash cow" right now is making sure their software works on the Motorola and Scientific-Atlanta boxes so that they can get access to a potential 20 million plus new subscribers via Comcast. Additionally, I think they want to get the Series 3 out by the holiday season so their resources are focused on finalizing the software and ramping up production so that there are enough units in the pipeline for the holidays (hopefully they learned from Microsoft's mistake with the Xbox 360).

I heard about new software called Crossover that runs Windows apps on OS X? I wonder if it will run TivoToGo? Only $59.95

I wouldn't count on it... not yet at least. I believe TTG uses components of Windows Media Player, and those wouldn't exist through Crossover

If you want something *now* your best bet is VirtualPC ( for PPC) or Parallels Workstation (for Intel).

Or go pick up a cheapo throwaway PC and just use it for TTG. Then give it away or something when the Mac version comes out

Boot Camp would work equally as well.

oh yeah, i meant to mention that... stupid brain ....

IMHO, I'd rather use Parallels than Boot Camp. Its bad enough running Windows, but to give up OS X to do so just makes it worse :b

AppleInsider (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=2357) thinks that Roxio will unveil something TiVo-Mac related at CES, though they don't offer any basis for this.

"Mac Ta-ta-ta-TeeVo?"

The article title implies that TiVo is named in a written ivitation: "The Novato, Calif.-based company this week distributed to affiliates a digital invitation to its booth at Macworld"

This part probably means TiVo-To-Go:
"Roxio, a division of Sonic Solutions popular for its Toast and Popcorn optical disc authoring software packages, is expected to deliver one of the most sought-after Mac software solutions during the conference."

The last sentence again implies the invitation mentioned software for TiVo:
"Roxio in the invitation also promises "show special prices, free gifts and raffle prizes. So what's in the software developer's secret sauce? What was that earlier? Did we say TiVo?"

The read the Apple Insider story again and now I realize the ivitation does not mention TiVo as they have posted a copy of it. Apple Insider is saying they know what's under wraps and it's a Mac-TiVo software solution. We would need collaboration or better still, confirmation from additional sources.

Download TiVoToGo for Mac then hold down the Apple/Control key while clicking on the icon in the prefs menu. You then see a video option, type in the IP addy of the Tivo box and use Tivo for the username and your media access key for the password. You will then be able to down shows to your mac. I would not use a VM like Parallels to download shows. It will eventually fill up your HD space that you set aside for the VM Harddrive to use.

But you still have to use other programs to get the .tivo file into something usable by the Mac.

Yes all you need to do is convert the tivo file. Search on macupdate or versiontracker for Tivo and you will find plenty of apps.

My point is that even with the hidden option in the current version of Mac TiVo Desktop it is still not a complete solution.

Currently, the best thing is TiVoDecode Manager. You can find it on www.versiontracker.com

It basically consists of a downloader, a decoder, and a converter in the same application. You will need VLC Player to play back the file though. It will not play back properly in QuickTime Player. The file is also able to be burned to DVD using Toast without any problems.

You don't need VLC if you have the newest version of TivoDecode Manager. It will auto-convert your file to the iPod format (mpeg4) so you can play the files in iTunes and on your iPod. Once the author adds automated downloading/importing of your favorite shows, it'll be perfect!

That's good to know.

I never download to watch in iTunes. I only download in native MPEG-2 format in order to archive to DVD. You still need VLC to view the native format version.
