Just got my TIVO newsletter and was skimming over it when I saw a deal for the new dual tuner TIVO. I thought that was just a figment of someone's imagination. It sounds like a pretty good deal....180 hour dual tuner box and a year of service for $299 and a free wireless adapter. Anyone going for it?

Is it an SA unit or DTivo?

It's a standalone. Came out about a month or two ago. Dual Tuners works off standard cable, but if you have a box, it still can only control one box. It's a Series 2, so none of the new Series 3 features, but it's definitely a Dual Tuner for those with cable without a box.

I have the dual tuner myself. It's a godsend since my TiVo is recording almost non stop during the evening. One of the first things I realized is that most of my shows come off the non digital channels, so the analog tuner does most of the recording and I can watch the HBOs or be recording something else at the same time.
The DT is a great piece of hardware.

I can say with complete sincerity that a dual tuner + a slingbox represents pretty much the current heights of television viewing technology. The only way it will can better in the short term is when HDTV gets added into the mix.

Do you have a link to this special? I just subscribed to the newsletter, but haven't gotten one yet.

It is on their website now. What kind of sucks is that I just got my TiVo a few months ago and was pissed that they didn't have a DT. Now they have one and there aren't any exchange programs, at least thats what the reps say. What should I do? I don't want to get another one. Unless I wait until my service runs out in 9 months..

Maybe I need new glasses - can you post a link to the 180 hour DT Tivo with 12 months of service and a wireless adapter for $299? All that stuff is $413.99 ala cart.
Thanks,

Only if it wasn't a bundled (tivo box and service combined) purchase.

Its not a bundle - I got the box on its own from BestBuy and activated it online.
Thanks for the clarification. I will be ordering mine very soon. This deal if FAR cheaper than me buying a DT 80hr box and waiting for the rebate, as I will also need the wireless adapter. Besides, as of right now, I plan on mostly using MRV and keeping this one stock drive.
Thanks for the link!

Does anyone know what the monthly service fee would be after the 1-year prepaid period?

It stays the same unless you call. If you call after 12 months, you can get it at the regular rate of $12.95/month.

Sure, it seems like a great deal, but if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Just read the fine print:
(7) TiVo service is accessed through a standard telephone line and is available as a local call in most areas. In some areas, local and long-distance toll charges may apply.
Ha! What good is that wireless adapter going to do if you have to call in?

You don't have to use the modem. Its obviously worded wrong as a phone line isn't required. I would venture to say they aren't installing special software on the 180 DT units to force you to use the phone line. Especially since that costs tivo more money anyway.

Pissed off. I blame TiVo. If they had the Series 3 ready on July 1st, like they should have, then I could have had an enjoyable weekend TiVoing HD shows and rewiring my HT gear and reprogramming my Harmony 880. But no, they're too busy smoking Cuban cigars and counting their big stacks of money to worry about anything so trivial as getting their products out on time. I can see them now, hanging out in the TiVo executive lounge, drinking their Bombay Saphire martinis, lighting each other's cigars with hundred-dollar bills while Pony, just back from TC-con, is telling them how he showed the faithful a shiny new box with old series 1 hardware inside and told them it was a new HD TiVo. And they all share a big laugh at our expense.

Sure they got the wording wrong, or maybe they're just selling defective products to suckers. That's because the fat cats at TiVo are probably too busy eating their catered lunch of Spotted Owl breast nestled in a bed of the livers of siberian tiger cubs, while they ride in their Humvee limos to the Gucci store to buy komodo dragon shoes, to worry anything so trivial as contract wording, product quality, or delivering the Series 3 on July 1st.

from reading fine print
After your 1 year prepaid service subscription is complete, your TiVo Package will continue at the then-applicable monthly rate for the 1 year TiVo Package, currently $19.95 per month.
So is it 12.95 or 19.95? That would really suck if it made you stay at 19.95. I assumed the higher rate for the new purchases was to cover the cost of the hardware.

I think if you don't do anything it will stay at $19.95. A call to TiVo should get it changed to $12.95. If it doesn't then cancel the account and re-activate it at $12.95.

Best regards,
Stephen
P.S. Spotted Owl breast tastes, surprisingly, not at all like chicken.

Nice to see that unlike some, you and the other Tivo employees that post here have a good sense of humor (and, by necessity, a thick skin).

What would you guys do without me looking out for you? Seems like someone owes someone a Series 3.

Probably because Jerry was grilling them right next to the dolphin steaks.

wrong. You call in after 12 months and they lower the rate to 12.95.
Now I agree this is really only a good deal for someone buying their very first TiVo.
as for me I would get one from Best Buy as well
100$ after MIR and then 84$ for one year of servcice at 6.95

Not wrong. Did you read the small print quote in my post you removed? Why would it say that if it was not the case.....
Either way I am not taking the chance.

You're not taking a chance. Read the first post of the new pricing summary thread near the top of this forum. At the end of your 1-year commitment you can go on paying the $19.95/month on a month-to-month basis for as long as you want. Or you can call TiVo and ask them to stop eating their mountain gorilla jerky long enough to put you on a new service plan -- you can get $12.95/month for 1-year, or you can get a 1, 2, or 3-year prepaid plan. You can also go to $6.95/month if you have multiple TiVos by then, just don't expect one of them to be a Series 3, because they don't exist yet.

This would be a second box as it is.
Thanks for the clarification guys.
