Recent posts have made it clear that a series 2 SA can't be used unsubscribed and just as a media server. However a DirecTivo can. Are there any gotchas I should be aware of before hitting ebay again? I'm aware of the following:

1/ Can't be a R10 unit
2/ Need to have an access card

To access video from tivoserver and a hacked Series 2 the Directivo will need to be hacked. Are there any significant differences from hacking a Series 2? Will superpatch do it all? Any pointers to a good 'how to' post? I need to get up to speed on this variety of Tivo asap, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Its not that a Standalone cannot be hacked to be used as an unsubbed standalone media client, it is just that such is a paid feature, and discussing that would is considered theft of services, egro forbidden here.

All that said, the D-TiVo needs zipper, and the Standalone needs Superpatch applied to directly work with a DirecTV DVR.

The R10 might be doable with a PROM mod, and I think all that is needed is the card sense switch closed.

Actually Zipper is just an automated way of of applying the superpatch and installing the most common hacks. That said Zipper is probably the EASIEST way to hack the DTivo the way you want.

Also, just in case it wasn't clear... The SA Tivo also needs to be superpatched to see the DTivo.
