So I have Media Player 10, and tivo desktop 2.2.
Here's what happens:
I start a .tivo file in windows media player 10, and it starts playing.
2 seconds in, the video freezes, and the audio continues.
3 more seconds, and the audio stops, and MP10 crashes.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

You need a different MPEG-2 codec.
Here is a free one to try

Trouble shooting these sorts of problems can be tricky. The best way to do it is to use GraphEdit to render a .tivo file and see which filters it's using for playback. Then use something like the RadLight Filter Manager (http://www.radlight.org/products/filter_manager/index.php) to uninstall the MPEG decoder being used, then try again.
One note: Some of the filters installed on your system might be being used by programs which load them explicitly. So keep track of the ones you uninstall so that you can reinstall them if needed.

You may also want to check out Microsoft's XP codec widget that shows you the active codec and lets you change the default.

That thing does NOTHING for playback! All it does is change the default codec used for conversion from MPEG to WMV for portable devices.

I thought it allowed me to change the codec WMP uses for playback? Doh! Good thing I've never had codec problems since I wouldn't have been able to solve them. ;)
