After a power outage when I plug in the Tivo 2 I get a series of 3 tones and a pause and it repeats for a few minutes. The Red and green LEDs are lit.

It is a ATT branded TiVo TCD130040.

Ani idea what I need to repair? Power Supply, Disk, etc?

Thanks,

- Rich

Almost certainly at least the power supply. You can test the hard drive with the downloadable manufacturer's hard drive fitness utility. Does the unit have lifetime sub on it? If not, it will probably be cheaper to try and pick a working replacement unit on eBay. There are lots of series twos in the $60-$70 range if one is patient.

The folks from Weakness claimed it was most certianly the disk. Oh well, I ordered a new disk since this does have lifetime service.

If that does not work, I guess I have to try the power supply.

thanks,

Rich

If you're not getting any display, i.e., the "Welcome, powering up" screen, then it sounds more like the power supply... can you tell if the fan is spinning or not when it's plugged in?

It's funny you ask our advice, 20 minutes later someone says - It's probably the power supply, and the next day you come back and say you bought a new hard drive.

Call back Weaknees and ask how a bad hard drive makes the unit beep 3 times.

For some reason, I did not get an email notification and Weakness responded last night first:

That's almost definitely a bad drive. A "replace" kit from here...

I figured they new what they were talking about

Yes. The fan is spinning. I can hear at least 1 of the two drives engage and seek and then there are beeps. That's why I thought the drives might be it. I will test the voltages when I go to install the drive. It has been a few years so it is not that bad an idea to swap out two drives 160gigs for a single 320.

- Rich Duh... you're getting beeps and lights, so it's getting power... I blocked that part out of your first post... therefore, it's probably the hard drive, like they said... hopefully it's not something worse...

But if one of the drives isn't spinning up, then that's most likely your problem.

Here's wishing you luck... :)

Thanks. I was planning on using Instant Cake to reload an image onto a 320gig drive. I am hoping it supports big drives...

Did you check the release notes for Instant Cake? In my opinion, Instant Cake for your model TiVo will NOT support a larger hard drive than 137GB.

Look here (http://www.*************.com/article/10140/) for more info. Scroll down to Series 2, then look for your model number. After the model number you will see [4.0-xx-x-140] which indicates the TiVo software version. This refers to version 4.0 which did not support LBA48 (drives larger than 137GB). Further down you can read specific info under Drive Sizes.

Also, check this thread. The model number is not the exact same as yours, but you will get the idea.

I read that although I am not sure how to go about getting a LB48 image to restore?

You will most likely get better answers if you post this question in the upgrade center section of this forum. There are tons of knowledgeable people lurking here, and they will be glad to help. I am just not that sophisticated - yet.

I have used instant cake, but not the Universal boot CD that you refer to. It sounds like the Universal CD will work, but I would think the universal CD that you refer to would be used in conjuction with the Instant Cake CD. (One CD for LBA48 support, one CD for the image). But as I said, check with the upgrade center.
