Now Playing Download Speeds (Mac)

Hi, I am downloading via 802.11b wireless, but getting varied speed results:
OSX4/G4 Laptop (FF or Safari rss off) 802.11g = 360kbs
OSX3/G4 Tower (older Safari) wired to Airport Extreme = 470kbs!
Odd that I should do better with the slower processor.
I would have thought the connection variation would make no difference since the 11b is the bottleneck.
Insights welcome. Hacks for speed? Any use over LAN?

In the meantime I've ordered a Tivo11g and will leave for vacation with a clear mind and Tivo, and won't miss a show!
Still holding my breath for the full T2Go, but I'll take what I can get. Being able to backup and restore the .tivo files is great.

Being able to backup and restore the .tivo files is great.If both devices(TiVo and Mac) are connecting wirelessly to the router, speeds will be drop because both signals will be vying for the routers attention(and everything must pass through the router). The best speeds will be obtained by having both devices wired to the router(although that is not always a practical possiblity). The processor doesn't have much to do with it because even moderately low-power ones could keep up the incoming traffic. You'll definitely get better results with the TiVo-Branded adapter than any 802.11b device.

Seems like I remember someone saying that with wireless, the slowest device on the network dictates the speed the router uses UNLESS its a dual speed A+G router... So if you have a b device on the network it is going to cause the router to only do b speeds.

Which would explain the slower speed. Try removing the b device and seeing if the speeds increase.

If I read that correctly, the *TiVo* is the b device - can't remove that without spoiling the whole enterprise. ;)

You'll also want to look at the signal strength - if there is any interference or a weaker signal for one of the computers, that would slow the download. Is the laptop further away from the base station than the tower? Behind a wall or other obstruction?
