When I playback files taken from my Tivo, the audio quality is so poor that I can barely hear it. I can get great volume when playing DVDs, CD's or playing Internet radio. ONly Tivo recordings have lousy audio. Any ideas?

There is an "Audio Boost" setting in TiVo Desktop that will make it louder.

Thank you Dan! I knew there had to be something! Still a little low, but it was barely audible before.

If it still seems low you might also check the volume slider in Windows Media Player and the master volume control you get to by double clicking the speaker icon in your tray. Both are independant of one another and both can have an effect on the volume of TiVo files.

Dan, I have checked the volume slider, and master volume control. Even when they are at their highest, it still seems somewhat low. After turning up all the volume everywhere and watching a tivo recorded item, I am always in for a shocker whenever I play any other audio!

Some issue with the CODEC that is playing back the MP2 audio? I assume you could install GraphEdit and figure out with codec it is and try installing a different one, or using weights to make a different codec play it...

Do you have the TiVo connected to a digital cable box? I find that programs recorded on the one TiVo we have connected to a digital cable box are considerably lower in volume then programs recorded on the TiVos connected to straight cable.

Gconnery, Interesting idea about the codec... I will have to look into it.

Dan, Yes, it is connected to the digital cable box. Interesting that the box would degrade the audio quality. I guess if I really think about it, sometimes, I find myself turning the volume on the TV WAY up to be able to hear the audio.

Maybe I should take a closer look at the connections. Maybe a bad cable wire?

Could be a bad cable between the box and the TiVo. It could also be a setting on the cable box. Some have their own internal volume setting, so you may want to check that. Also if the cable box has a setting about digital audio compression try turning that all the way up. (this makes channels with 5.1 audio sound better on stereo devices like a TiVo)
