View Full Version : How is 2.3+ deciding to tag files?

I'm finding that the meta-tags for shows that have been converted are very often wrong. Specifically when it decides to pick a season for the program. I've played with converting: Lost, Kim Possible, and Justice League Unlimted. And its got a less than 10% success rate on getting the season correct. I mean all you have to do is go to TV.com and you can see their season information is flat out wrong.

Does anyone know the process used for determining season for a program? and for other meta-tags?

The metadata is stored in the .tivo file, which in turn comes from the TiVo itself. It's possible that your recordings just have bad data. To check this go to the TiVo, go to the description screen for the program and press the Info button. This will bring up an extended information screen that includes the episode number.

Yeah, I had checked there, and the information it's placing into the file isn't displayed in there at all. The closest it has is EpiNum (or something like that).

However looking at an example, "The Doomsday Sanction" it shows 16 for the EpiNum. However "The Doomsday Sanction" has a production number of 368 which means it was created in season 3 and is the 68th episode of the entire series. However it was shown during Season 4 as the 3rd Episode of the Season.

However it sets the album as: "Justice League Unlimited, Season 2"

So there has to be something more going on here than simply reading the recorded meta data.

BTW I grabbed "AV TV Show Tagger" so I could see the full meta-data and edit it if I desired. And with it here's another example:

Kim Possible Episode "Monkey Fist Strikes".

This was production number 103, but was shown as Episode 13 of Season 1.

Checking in Tagger, the Episode number is 103, but the Season is 2.

And it gets put in album: "Kim Possible, Season 2"

So something is quite odd.

Just a quick note... production numbers and episode numbers are not always the same. I work in Master Control at a TV station, and some of the syndicated shows we receive to air have both a episode number and a production number. Sometimes the episode number for the syndicated run is different than the production number since they may decide to air them in a different order. Usually on the slate at the beginning of the feed they will list both an episode and production number. I know The Nanny and Mad About Your are like this.

It's possible this metadata is in there just not visible from any other location. Perhaps it's simply wrong. TiVo gets their guide data from Tribune, who in turn gets it from the individual channels. So there is a lot of places it could get screwed up before being put into your converted file.

I agree its just bad sourcing.

I looking at it in the converted files. I see things like an episode 103 that every guide for the show says was aired during the first season is listed as Season 2.

That's what you get when lazy people entering in the meta data I guess.

And yes I know some shows don't follow a decent pattern in numbering episodes and in keeping episode numbers and production numbers in sync. However I'm talking about shows that I know do in fact keep their production numbers aligned with season/episode.

How about using that method you should us before for viewing the meta in a .tivo file...

http://<Computer_IP>:8080/TiVoConnect/TivoNowPlaying/I<filename>.TiVo?Format=text%2Fxml

username:tivo
password:<MAK>

For some reason I can get this syntax (with username and password in url) to work for me...

http://tivo:<MAK>@<Computer_IP>:8080/TiVoConnect/TivoNowPlaying/I<filename>.TiVo?Format=text%2Fxml

What is this "AV TV Show Tagger" of which you speak? I tried a Google search and came back with only this post. Can you please let us know what this is?
