Is there a way to change the default location for the "My Tivo Recordings for Portables" folder in Tivo Desktop 2.3? From within the desktop, there is a button to view the folder, but it doesn't look like there is a way to change it.
Thanks!

Thanks!if it works the same as 2.2 there's a 'preferences' choice in the 'files' drop down menu where you can change the default location.

I am having the same problem. I would like to store these files on my larger media hard drive but the only thing I can do in the preferences is look at what is in the portables folder. I can change where the original file copy location is but not the portables copy location. This would be a helpful patch.

I couldn't find a way to change it. I was hoping that when I changed the regular TiVo recordings directory it would follow, but no such luck.

I just came here to find the answer to the same question.
I assumed it would save them in the same location as my Video but it seems forced to go into my documents. The problem is I only have a few meg left in that location and store all my multi-media on a separate hard drive.

What's confuses me even more is this: the documentation on the web pages says that the converted recordings will be in a sub-directory of the main TiVo Recordings folder. But instead its another directory at the same level.
Personally I think they worried too much about protecting the user from stuff they really don't need to be protected from.

It may be at the same level as the default location for recordings but you can al least change that to another location. If it was a subdirectory of the main recordings than this would be less of an issue becuase presumably that way it would change too.
Maybe that is what they intended and its current location is in fact a bug.

It sure would be nice if you could have it dumped right into your itunes folder so that when you plugged in your ipod it would automatically update it. where it is now you have to click it and drag it over into 'my video' on itunes.
Tivo, how about some input on this and an update correcting this issue?!

Same problem here - I can't change the default location in the Preferences menu. I can change the default location for where the default .tivo files go, so it's really odd that TiVo chose to do this.
Right now, I've created a shortcut from the directory where wants to be:
C:\Documents and Settings\(user)\My Documents\My TiVo Recordings for Portables
to where I want it:
M:\My TiVo Recordings\My TiVo Recordings for Portables
I'll see if that works and report back. This really should be a subdirectory of wherever you download the .tivo files to, but hopefully, this is a way around it.
Ok, back....it ignored the shortcut and made a new directory. That is horrible. What I also don't get is that it does not show any sort of progress bar when converting the file. Instead, it just says when the conversion starts and stops Why is that? It does not make sense, considering how they show status on transfers to and from the TiVo

This is actually not an easy thing to do. I recently wrote a little DirectShow based video conversion program for my Father and discovered that DirectShow's built in progress indicators only work when the program is playing in realtime. If you're doing a "fast as possible" conversion the reported progress is completely wrong. I ended up having to estimate the output file size and then base the progress off the current size of the output file. Unfortunately because the calculation is based off an estimation sometimes the program finishes when it says 98% and other times it actually goes up to 103%. That's fine for my Father, but for a commercial product that would be kind of hokey.

Well if they reported it by % of the original file processed that'd always reach 100%, would it? Even though it is uneven, depending on how much compression is occurring, it would be something other than "processing". Oh wait, there is no seperate window saying that, either.
Sorry, I'm still bummed there's no Mac version yet.

This location seems to be hard-coded into TiVo Desktop ... it's not anywhere in the registry.
Let's hope a future release will let us change this like we can for the normal Recordings directory.

If you are using NTFS, you can use Junction.exe (Sysinternals freeware) to re-map any hard-coded folder like that to another folder/location of your choosing. Junction points are interpreted for programs/applications by the Windows kernel, so TiVo Desktop has no choice/never sees the redirection. It is one of the most useful utilities I have ever come across...
