 My 160 + 160 GB upgrade has died. I have re installed my original 40 GB drive and it is working fine for the time being. I'd like to upgrade it again. I have a series 1 Phillips Model HDR-212. Unfortunately, I lost touch with the helpful tech. who fixed me up last time. Can someone please help me????? Oh, by the way, It lasted almost 2 years... and it is worth it, but I'd like to make it last forever this time.
Thanks everyone.

search for mfs tools 1 you may go the easy route and buy the instant cake image, if your not that familiar. It will build a plug and play drive for you.

Yeah OK, I just want the guy to send it in the mail like last time. I tried that cake thing, and I think it's a virus. Destroyed both drives and a perfectly good computer too.

I don't think InstantCake is a virus...
Since you still have the OEM 40GB hard drive, you can use MFSTools and tpip to extract and expand your TiVo software to a new set of two drives.
I'm no Linux maven by any means, but I was able to use MFSTools and tpip as described above and it's been fantastic. I never want to be forced to send my unit back to TiVo when I can fix it myself significantly faster.

No, I don't want to send it to Tivo. Last time I found a guy who sold the drives pre-loaded with all of the software. that worked great. When I tried the insta cake, I messed up 2 brand new maxtor drives. And, the computer was also ruined. I am not going to run that program ever again. It may have been my fault, but I am an electronic technician who knows how to follow instructions. I think it was a virus...

I've used the instacake to upgrade my mom's tivo. It's not a virus, and would not destroy drives and a computer.
Anyway, SJAndrew has good advice if you want them already done.

No problem - I used them for my first upgrade when I didn't feel comfortable w/ MFSTools.
