Am I correct in telling him that he will still be able to use his Standalone box on his home network as a "Video and Audio Jukebox" with TivoDesktop even though he isn't paying the monthly fee?

Nope! When you discontinue the service the ONLY thing you'll be able to do with the TiVo is playback previously recorded programs and trickplay live TV. All other functions, including the music and video transfer functions, are completely disabled.

Personally, I think he's making a huge mistake, but DirecTV gave him a DVR... so many get fooled like that.

Why wouldn't he just activate the tivo w/ Directtv? And toss the R15 in the trash?
