View Full Version : Second disk problems

I thought this would be easy, but...
I want to add a second drive to my TiVo. To begin: I started out with a version 6.2 InstaCake, and the PTVUpgrade on the original 120GB disk. This is working well, and still does. Now to add another drive. I took the new drive over to my PC and (I believe) got its partitions all fixed up, and installed it in my TiVo. I can Telnet into it and see its partitions in /proc/partitions. When I bring up TiVoWebPlus, and look at the "Info" screen, it appears there as well with its sector count, geometry, and passing SMART. Now the problem: the space available doesn't reflect the added drive (400GB) at all. Like it isn't there!
What magical incantation at the shell (I can telnet into the box just peachy) can I give so that this drive makes my TiVo big enough for my wife to have "no problem".
If you want I can post output from /proc/partitions, and anything else. I understand Linux VERY well.

Thanks

To add a second drive, you need mfstools. Put both drives in the computer and use mfsadd to add the second drive. This does everything that needs to be done. However, this marries the two drives and the TiVo will not work if either of them fails. I is better to run with one large drive rather than two drives.

If you can part with the programs on your current hard drive, why not just Instantcake the 400GB drive like you did with the 120. Then just use the 400 by itself.

I guess I need to "Marry" the two drives. I setup the second one, and it looks good (in the TiVo box). Is there any way to "Marry" the two drives while they are in the TiVo box? It should be something like "hey, 2nd drive here use it!" or something like that. I really don't want to InstaCake the 400GB drive because I'll lose all the stuff my wife has recorded on it (and I don't have any large drives to store it). The machine I'm using to write files to the drives has only 1 open drive slot (it already has 2 IDEs and a CD-Rom). It gets impractical to munge everything and disconnect it all. Maybe I will need to do just that (*SIGH*).

Maybe I could solve all of this if a version of MFSTools was available that ran on the TiVo box itself. Yes, it would probably be VERY dangerous, but it would get the job done.

Yes, it would probably be VERY dangerous, but it would get the job done. You can marry the drives on the PC side via mfsadd. This shouldn't disturb any of your recordings, if you do it right. Make sure you use "-r 4" with a 400GB drive. You will need to install both the A drive and the B drive in your PC to do this.

You can also "bless" a new B drive with BlessTivo and installed it in your tivo. This will cause the tivo to marry the two drives. This would require only putting the "B" drive in your PC.

Finally, there is an "mfsadd" binary on the tivo. mfsadd is what is automatically run when you install a blessed drive. If you are feeling lucky, try running it manually to see what happens..
